I'm not in Florida, but I hear the shark, gator, hurricane, fire, lightning etc. stories on a regular basis. Florida doesn't get earthquakes, California has had a single tropical cyclone in the last century, Florida is seismically quiet, generally, but Florida and California are scary places to live.

I think we had an S2K regular who was the victim of a venomous spider bite.

Here in Miami, gators are not the problem (except in west-Dade)

We have the much mroe dangerous crocs to contend with, including on the main UM campus. On Key Biscayne, there is a decent sized population of salt water crocs (and I kind of know where they live, as when I play golf on Biscayne, I always tend to hit my tee shots into their living quarters)

We had a 7 footer taken out of the pond...We pretty much have a closed in community...Well my son went to the pond a couple days ago with a camera and took pictures of 4 different gators...The biggest was 4 foot...We went from 1 to none and now 4...


Oh and I am the one that is disabled do to the spider bite... Kill them all before they kill you...

You know that most gator attacks are do to stupid humans...If you jump into the water a nite in florida...You have just became food...

Lets see who was the animal here:

The bold statement says everything. Everyone knows that there are alligators and crocodiles in the canals in South Florida. How in anyone's right mind would take a swim in these canals. The alligator was killed, which proves that humans were the animals in this case. The alligator was just being normal.

Nature was not on the attack, like the thread title says, nature was being normal. Basically, you come to me, I take a bite. Like when we go fishing, if the fish takes a bite, we take the fish. The human went to the alligator, the alligator took a bite. Nature would be in the attack if you see an alligator going into a person's home and attacking the person.

The alligator was doing what alligators do, true enough. Just scary that swimming in fresh or salt water is so dangerous in a state that has such warm weather.

Yep!! But it's something you almost never see. A person taking a swim in a canal simply because the threat of alligators or crocodiles. It's like a cardinal rule. That's why we have beaches that are great and mostly safe from these animals. I'm not mad at you or anyone, it's just the fact that they always try to make "nature" be the one that made the error.

There are a few alligators in the coastal creeks and rivers in Texas, but I can't recall any news reports of attacks.


And our part of the Gulf seems to have a lot less shark activity.

We have a big alligator at a local Golf course here, he doesn't really bother us that much he'll just come out from time to time and roam around.

I don't think Florida is as bad as you're making it sound. I've lived here nearly all my life and still have all my arms and legs. You just have to learn to coexist with these creatures and respect their grounds. Florida is a beautiful and fun place to live and can't imagine myself anywhere else.

I know some small canals that have over 50...Just because you only see one ther is probably 10 you dont see...

Exactly. This guy deserves a Darwin award for stupidity. Anyone with half of a brain doesn't go swimming in a lake at night, that's why we have swimming pools down here, so you can swim without having to worry about becoming something's midnight snack, or early breakfast.
