Should I tell 'em?

Have a wee bit of situation here....my nieghbors have a MAJOR bat infestation and I DO mean MAJOR!

I smoke outside, I've never smoked in the house and every evening around 1915 hours (7:15 for you civilians LOL!), I've got an accurate count of 183 bats flying out of my nieghbors attic vent!! That's right, I've got a counter thingy and last evening I clocked 183 bats of various sizes swarming out 5-10 at a time.

NOW...the problem, do I tell 'em and have 'em try to KILL all of the bats (and believe me, they WOULD kill 'em, they're @zzholes) or I do I let the little bats poop be the tell tell sign? You KNOW the smell has GOT to be gettting BAD with the heat and such! PLUS...there's a GOOD chance the weight of ALL the poop will eventually cave the sheet rock in and VIOLA`, problem cured, they will HAVE to MOVE

Bad Brother, REALLY bad Seriously, I feel as if I should tell them with the major health problems that could be looming but then again, removing 183 bats has GOT to be a chore and knowing them like I do, they would not spend the money to have a professional remove them. Besides, these bats have REALLY kept the "skeeters" down this summer

Is this something that you can pass along to someone in the police force or have the health department/animal control people handle?

I'd hate to see them die due to the neighbor's ignorance, but it is not only a health issue for them, but perhaps one for the neighborhood as well.

Steph...our animal control guy doesn't have the capability or the know how PLUS, the bats are considered wildlife so the Az Game & Fish Commision would have to handle this call and believe me, getting THEM to respond to a call takes an act of Congress LOL!

If I remember correctly, bats are a protected speices due to their dwindling numbers thanks to the use of pesticides. Bats are great for the ecology however it comes with a price, RABIES! So...what does a person do? Extermenate them and face possible jail time for eradicating an endangered speices or let 'em live and move out due to your house being condemended?

Hmmm, Dennis if that was my next door neighbor I wouldn't tell them, we have neighbors from he**, I'd leave the bats alone and let them take overrun the neighbors attic

That's ashame that the animal control can't/won't do anything.

I guess that I would tell them and warn them about the fact that they are federally protected and will have to be removed, not killed. You're the police afterall.

I was sitting around a camp fire and a bat flew into my hair. My father said hold still and reached up and removed it and handed it to me. Freaked me out. It was the softest thing but ugly oh my god that things face is so wierd. Didn't a bunch of people in a remote village recently die and they think it was bats carrying rabies? I'd tell them.

The incident referred to occurred in Venezuela were 38 people died from the consequences of bites from vampire bats (yes such things do exist). Not all bats are protected in AZ only certain species of them. AZ, too bad your neighbors don't have a bell tower because then you could tell them that they have bats in their belfry

Looks to me like your problem breaks down to this--

Do you want to be responsible for the death of 183 bats or the illness and possibly deaths of the people living in that house? Do you really dislike them that much?

Call the health department, the wildlife group, and the animal control people and then go tell your neighbors. After that it is out of your hands.

LOL@ Steve...let me tell ya's, the woman DOES have BATS up stairs, this women is TRULY "Title 36" (as known in the law enforcement circles...Title 36 = "KNUCKIN' FUTZ!")

MomH...sadly, I DO despise these people with a PASSION! I have NEVER felt so strong about someone, nor have I EVER disliked someone SO much....NA, I'll take that BACK, my EX WIFE takes the CAKE! Anyways, I call them "soul snatchers!" They latch on to ANYONE who will talk to them and I do mean ANYONE, the cable guy, the phone guy, the trash guy! I knew something was WRONG when they first moved in and he made the comment, "Finally, some GOOD neighbors we can talk to!" WELL...I had to do a background check on him for a crime approx. 1.5 yrs. ago, found out they have MOVED, now sit down for this, they have MOVED over 23 times in the past 11 years! Now WHY would you MOVE so much? It's obvious, their house is a FREAKIN' PIG PEN,they are TRULY white trash...sorry, but it's true!

ANYWAYS...I did some more research online Steve and these bats ARE on the endangered species list, bottom line, it's about time for the bats to fly south and besides, according to the website, August is when the baby bats are born, hence the reason for the huge numbers AND the different sizes! Bat guano according to this site is one of the most harmful droppings of ANY animal, nasty chit I'd say

I still have mixed feelings on whether to tell them, I LOVE bats and I don't want to see them harmed!

Dennis, if they are due to fly south, I would then just let them be and then tell your neighbors that they have some cleaning and patching to do before they come back.

Sounds to me like they are renters. Call the landlord. You might solve both the problems at the same time. Might even keep them from suing a landlord when they get sick.

Bats are flying rats, squirrels are rats with fuzzy tails, chipmunks are rats with a racing stripe, bunnys are rats with long ears, guinea pigs are very cute rats, etc etc. I call 'em rats because I don't like them very much. I'm not going to split entomological hares.
