I heard a report on Fox News Channel that the Boston area is also reporting power outages... makes me wonder if my family members are part of the area effected.

Power Outage Strikes NYC, Other Cities
Cause Unclear; NY City Hall Operating On Backup Generator

POSTED: 4:27 p.m. EDT August 14, 2003
UPDATED: 4:37 p.m. EDT August 14, 2003

NEW YORK -- A power outage hit cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit Thursday afternoon.

New York City Hall is operating on a backup generator and has power, and all major airports in the area are blacked out. The cause for the outage is unclear.

"We have no idea how extensive it is," an official with the Office for Emergency Management said.

Widespread power outages are also being reported in Detroit, Toronto and throughout Ontario. In northern Ohio, businesses and residents are reporting power outages from Toledo to Cleveland.

Portions of Connecticut, including Hartford, also have experienced power losses.

Yeah, I just got this as breaking news in my email. I wonder, is it some sort of incredible computer hacker situation or terrorism???

How is it so spontaneous??

This is getting bad. If a California city is hit(if it isn't already), or another East Coast city is hit, i'm going to be convinced it's terrorism.

I can't imagine -- rush hour, no traffic lights, no computer, no TV, no way to pump gas (unless you can find one of those old pumps...shyeah, right), no way to buy groceries (unless they have an old cash register and products with price tags instead of UPC codes...shyeah, right again), no AC.

Argh! No AC?????

just found out from my friend at wlox that terrorism has been ruled out. her sources say that this is a normal outage and is grid related.

Watching MSNBC live on net. They're reporting that people are trapped in elevators in high rise apartments and down in subways.

I'm with you, Bfez...terrorism was my first thought. However, they are reporting a transformer on fire in NY. But how could that one transformer affect all those areas?

It's just crazy.

If it's terrorism, I'm gonna be p***ed. However, it's not as violent as previous acts. So it seems like it must be something else.

From MSNBC's explanation of the power grid across the US:
"The power grid, essentially an interconnected grid of transmission lines, covers most of the United States as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. It’s divided into three major regions: the East, the West and Texas. These three regions are called “interconnections” and they provide all consumer electricity in their areas."

Incredible, Texas is one whole interconnection in itself.

Hahahaha! Almost every street in the entire city of Watertown has NO power...except for mine!!! Power is working fine for me, but the next street over, they are in the dark.

I went to the mall, no lights so stores locked up, they didn't want any looting. Traffic lights are out, driving was very dangerous last time I was out so I think I'll stay indoors tonight.

Also- Just heard this on my local news- Almost right after the power went out, fighter jets (F-16s) took off from Syracuse hancock intl airport.

NYC airports are closed, lets hope the flights in the air can make it down OK.

NEW YORK (Aug. 14) - A huge power blackout hit U.S. cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit and north into Canada Thursday afternoon.

In New York City, the blackout affected subways, elevators and airports, including John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.

Thousands of people streamed into the streets of lower Manhattan in 90-degree heat.

In Toronto, Ontario, too, workers left their offices after the blackout hit shortly after 4 p.m. EDT.

Traffic lights were out throughout downtown Cleveland, creating havoc at the beginning of rush hour.

There were reports of outages in New Jersey and Connecticut as well.

Every prison in New York state reported a loss of power and had switched to backup generators, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.

White House officials were monitoring the blackout from Washington and from San Diego, where President Bush addressed troops at midday.

It's affecting me only because the Internet is so darned slow, I am on a generator at the office anyway. My wife, at the house has been having problems with brown and black outs.

Hope this isn't a long night.

WNBC reporter just said that there are alot of police out patrolling. He pointed out that 2 years ago, the concern would have been looters. But now, the concern is how vulnerable the city is right now and how someone (terrorist) could take advantage of the situation.

I think the people of NY can get through this and, for the most part, they're probably being very supportive of each other at this time. Although there does seem to be quite a bit of chaos from what I'm seeing on video.

Wow, Cleveland is just a little too close for comfort right now!!! Those poor people!!! I've been away from the computer and TV all day. Didn't even know this was going on.

Once again Storm2K - thanks for keeping me in the know!

Anybody here at home where you can turn on the TV? Is FoxNews Channel on? Their website isn't updating. There's nothing about the blackout, so I'm wondering if they're down. I can stand MSNBC, but I can't stand CNN. I want my Fox News!

"Seen the lights go out on Broadway
That was so many years ago...
Before we all moved down to Florida
Before the Mafia
Took over Mexico...
There are not many who remember...
They say a handful still survive
To tell the world about
The day the lights went out
To keep the memories alive..."-Billy Joel

"Miami 2017" -- I LOVE Billy Joel. Have every album including a CD with songs he did with The Hassles and Attila. My fave, not surprisingly, is Storm Front.
