NEW YORK -- A power outage hit cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit Thursday afternoon.
New York City Hall is operating on a backup generator and has power, and all major airports in the area are blacked out. The cause for the outage is unclear.
"We have no idea how extensive it is," an official with the Office for Emergency Management said.

I can't imagine -- rush hour, no traffic lights, no computer, no TV, no way to pump gas (unless you can find one of those old pumps...shyeah, right), no way to buy groceries (unless they have an old cash register and products with price tags instead of UPC codes...shyeah, right again), no AC.
Argh! No AC?????

Watching MSNBC live on net. They're reporting that people are trapped in elevators in high rise apartments and down in subways.
I'm with you, Bfez...terrorism was my first thought. However, they are reporting a transformer on fire in NY. But how could that one transformer affect all those areas?
It's just crazy.
If it's terrorism, I'm gonna be p***ed. However, it's not as violent as previous acts. So it seems like it must be something else.
From MSNBC's explanation of the power grid across the US:
"The power grid, essentially an interconnected grid of transmission lines, covers most of the United States as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. It’s divided into three major regions: the East, the West and Texas. These three regions are called “interconnections” and they provide all consumer electricity in their areas."
Incredible, Texas is one whole interconnection in itself.

Hahahaha! Almost every street in the entire city of Watertown has NO power...except for mine!!! Power is working fine for me, but the next street over, they are in the dark.
I went to the mall, no lights so stores locked up, they didn't want any looting. Traffic lights are out, driving was very dangerous last time I was out so I think I'll stay indoors tonight.

NEW YORK (Aug. 14) - A huge power blackout hit U.S. cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit and north into Canada Thursday afternoon.
In New York City, the blackout affected subways, elevators and airports, including John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.
Thousands of people streamed into the streets of lower Manhattan in 90-degree heat.
In Toronto, Ontario, too, workers left their offices after the blackout hit shortly after 4 p.m. EDT.
Traffic lights were out throughout downtown Cleveland, creating havoc at the beginning of rush hour.
There were reports of outages in New Jersey and Connecticut as well.
Every prison in New York state reported a loss of power and had switched to backup generators, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.
White House officials were monitoring the blackout from Washington and from San Diego, where President Bush addressed troops at midday.

WNBC reporter just said that there are alot of police out patrolling. He pointed out that 2 years ago, the concern would have been looters. But now, the concern is how vulnerable the city is right now and how someone (terrorist) could take advantage of the situation.
I think the people of NY can get through this and, for the most part, they're probably being very supportive of each other at this time. Although there does seem to be quite a bit of chaos from what I'm seeing on video.

"Seen the lights go out on Broadway
That was so many years ago...
Before we all moved down to Florida
Before the Mafia
Took over Mexico...
There are not many who remember...
They say a handful still survive
To tell the world about
The day the lights went out
To keep the memories alive..."-Billy Joel

"Miami 2017" -- I LOVE Billy Joel. Have every album including a CD with songs he did with The Hassles and Attila. My fave, not surprisingly, is Storm Front.
