How was your 2008?

#1 Postby JonathanBelles » Fri Dec 26, 2008 3:21 pm

How was everyone's 2008? List your accomplishments and the best parts of the year here for the year 2008. Was 2008 your best year, or your worst year? For me, the list is long, and ill post a bit later.

lackluster bunch ehh?

Anyway, 2008 was a very big year for me. I graduated High School and joined Phi Theta Kappa. Those were probably the two largest things that happened directly to me. I also became Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa in August. Another story that dominated my life was my father's cancer, which is now more or less gone. School is the largest part of my life still. I maintained a(n unbelievable) 4.0 GPA in college, and graduated with a 4.3 weighted GPA in HS. I was Rotary Student of the Month for HS. I became a very widely spread volunteer. I took over chairs in Junior Achievement, which has helped over 400 grade school kids, and Relay for Life. I completed two Relay For Life events which raised $70,000 in total, nearly $4000 from my organizations. I also volunteered for Ronald McDonald House, where I helped upwards of 150 pediatric kids and hospitalized people. I've traveled all over the state between numerous trips to Universal where I conquered my fear of roller coasters, and Phi Theta Kappa conventions and events. My sister went into the military, and is home from AIT right now. I got accepted into the Honors College. I gave my first moderately sized audience speech to a crowd of 300. I also gave a speech and did a 15 page paper on Meteorology. I'm still laying the groundwork to go to FSU for a major in Meteorology.

All in all I had a very big year, probably the best so far. Amazing how much one can accomplish when you want to.

Well, my immediate family is well, all of us relatively healthy (wish my back was normal!) and quite happy with how the year nearly ended (Nov. 4th). Our youngest went away to college and LOVED IT! After a very brief but very homesick phase. Then she met new friends and ended up loving this phase of her life - the independence but mom/dad paying for everything (just about). Her sister is in her senior year of college. All in all, we're okay. Wish the economy was better (not selfishly but for ALL of us). But things have to get better (eventually).

All in all, 2008 was good for this member.

Great 2008, my team won the world series, ending a lifetime of sports heartbreak. I started college, while keeping my relationship in tact. Success all around.

Ups and downs - kind of like the stock market.

1) Learned my one brother had filed for bankruptcy. His house is safe but he has a lot of debt.
2) My niece graduated High School - I still remember her as a baby!
3) My nephew, Colin was born in July.
4) My two cats, Milo and Gipper had to be put down within 11 days of each other in August. Milo was 18 and Gipper was 20. I miss my babies.
5) I've traveled to NYC twice this year - once to see Spamalot and the other recently to see the Radio City Christmas show.
6) Phillies won the World Series! :D

In 2008 my most inportant dates are
- June 13rd-14th, the first birthdays in my life celebrated together with my girlfriend. 13rd was hers and 14th was mine. I'm 364 days older than her.
- July 21st, when the Olympic Village opened and I officially became a volunteer for the Olympic Games.
- Sept 30th, get aboard the airplane for Havana via Toronto and started my study abroad in Cuba, it also was my first time to be abroad.
- November 20th, as a member of the chorus of Chinese students in Cojimar, I together with 20 others, sang the song Guantanamera, for the visiting Chinese president Hu Jintao and Cuban leader Raul Castro. I know for many people in this world, never ever will have a chance to sing a song at the same time for two heads of state and various ministers.
- December 5th, I was elected "representante" of my class. That is how the Cubans call a head of a class. I have never been a head of a class in China.
- December 10th, I teached my first lesson for some students of the department of foreign languages of the University of Havana, whose major is Chinese. This is my first time to teach Chinese in a UNIVERSITY of a FOREIGN COUNTRY.
