They light the bonfires so that Papa Noel may find his way. Baton Rouge has them also. I stopped off at the Grosse Tete/ Rosedale exit off I-10 last Friday on the way back from New Orleans. They had some kind of bonfire or maybe Christmas lights in the bayou that runs through there. I'm thinking they may do the same thing. Hopefully i'll remember to look on my way back from picking my daughter up from the new orleans airport on Christmas eve.
