Norfolk Police Dog Killed In the Line of Duty Saturday Morning

A Norfolk police dog was shot and killed Saturday morning in the Oceanview section of the city.

Sources tell WAVY News 10 the four-year old dog named Faro was responding to an armed robbery call - police believe it was probably drug related - around 4:30am on Buckman Avenue.

A WAVY News 10 photographer who arrived on the scene a short time later heard shots fired on First View Street and Orange Avenue.

When he arrived at the scene of the shooting, he saw a man - who was still holding a gun - lying on the street.

Sources tell WAVY News 10 Faro apparently bit the man, then it's believed the man fired his gun at the dog, killing the canine.

Police have three suspects in custody

In The state of Virginia, A police dog is considered a uniformed officer and the penalty would include extensive jail time, and even possible execution. :o

HD......that's the law ANYWHERE in the USA. My wife and I are commisioned law officers with the White Mountain Apache Police Dept........we're with the K9 SAR Unit and yes.......my Flat Coat Retriever has the SAME rights as my wife and her dog. Even off duty officers with their partners, the dog is still considered *on duty* here in Az........

GOD THAT REALLY TICKS ME OFF! Go ahead, take a pot shot at me if you want to but DA** it.....leave my DOG alone!!! I hope they HANG the SOB that did it!

This is sad and unfortunately canine officer deaths are on the rise!! These dedicated trained dogs should have the same safety gear as human police officers. Such as the bullet proof vest!! They use these animals to divert themselves from being killed. If they care about these animals they should get them protective gear!! NUFF SAID!!

That's right Linda......our dogs, thanks to the White Mountain Apache PD have their own bullet proof vests, even though our dogs are used only on SAR missions, the police chief insists that they wear them! Now Macy....my dog, is about 2 months away from getting her NARC certification, THEN she will HAVE to wear it ALL the time!

Very sad!!! When I was youger..I participated ..In the "summer youth program"..we were paid minimum wage and road the summer school buses to a local high school. I took criminology and we got to meet the K-9 officers..The human officers taught us about their K-9 partners. It was very nice to see the relationship they shared. I hope they fry the scumbag that did this!!! :x

Johnathan......the bond we have with our dogs is unlike your common house/outside dog. We eat with them (so to speak, NO, I don't share Macys bowl "LOL"!), they sleep in the same room, they go everywhere WE go, I've even had Macy try to jump in the shower with me! Yes indeed, our K-9 partners in crime and searches ARE ONE with us! I can't even begin to tell you how much one on one training goes into our partners, with Macys NARC training, I spend on the average at LEAST 2 hours per day, not all at once, 7 days a week. I've got her *hitting* on the drugs in a house and out buildings, now the next step is vehicle searches, "THAT'S" a HUGE challenge!

Sounds like my Nannerbelle (she be a ho')...I can't even "sit on the porcelain throne" without her either scratching at the door, or "peek-a-poo"-ing through the crack to see where I am... 24/7/365, she is always, but ALWAYS there!

I applaud you Dennis!! That is great to hear. I know of a little girl who started asking people to save pennies to buy the dogs bullet proof vests. More people need to think like that little girl.

Wasn't that exciting Rainband? Even when those dogs retire, the officer asks to keep them as a pet at home. There was one officer who fought the city of Moss Point for his partner!! He won with plenty of public support.
