Will we do it this year?
According to the forum, on August 31, 2008 at 9:05pm we had 927 people online. As of right now we have 789 online. Will this be the year we beat that record?

To anyone who was online during this time, why was there so many then but for the rest of the day and before it was only around 500-700 users? I never saw it go over 800 so 1317 is really exceptional.

Right after the earthquake hit, the amount online started rising quickly and steadily. Every time I refreshed, there were a whole lot more online. The combination of Irene and the earthquake and we smashed our old record. It's good to know that people were coming here for information on the earthquake.

It was the earthquake. It went from about 700 to over 1300 in the 15 minutes following the quake then fell back down to less then 800.

Is that tally figure based on CDT or EDT? If it's CDT then that would fit but if it's EDT like what I have the time zone set at on my end then that would be a good 20 minutes before the earthquake hit.

Was it mostly guests or were there many more members online too? I think the highest so far this season in terms of members online at once was somewhere near 170 that I saw.

It wasn't before the earthquake hit. I was here. It started climbing quickly after the earthquake hit.
Yes, there were more guests, as usual, but both numbers went up. Since we allow 100% viewing in all of our weather forums, many of the "guests" you see aren't really guests. They're just members who haven't logged in and they don't want to (or don't think to) sign in unless they want to post. For that same reason, we also have a lot of guests who haven't registered. They just like to read.
