10 Years Later - Remembering 9/11/2001

#1 Postby brunota2003 » Sat Sep 10, 2011 3:29 pm

Thread to remember that fateful day in 2001, September 11...exactly 1 week before my 11th birthday.

I was in 6th grade, in my English class when we were told the news...we were not supposed to be told. We were about 70 miles from the Pentagon, and I remember the days after that, how empty the sky looked. We lived in a major travel corridor (central Va) for planes, and constantly saw jets flying overhead. That day was so sunny and clear, too...deep blue skies.

I am still shocked when those images come back to my mind.
That day was my first day in school ever. We had been out for lunch and were heading home when we heard the news about the attacks. It took a while for me (as a 6-year-old) to realize what just happened.

R.I.P. to all the people who were killed in the plane crashes, who died in the collapse or who gave their life to help and save others.

:flag: :flag: :flag: WE MUST NEVER FORGET!!! :flag: :flag: :flag:
I was about 6 blocks from the office when the first plane hit. I heard about it on my radio. Once I got to work I logged on to my computer and already had people from around the country sending me messages. As the morning wore on I and my fellow employees did our best to work, but a TV was set up in one of the conference rooms and that just about sealed it for me. 10 years ago, as I type I watched in horror as the 1st tower collapsed. Then I had to shift gears and head for the hospital as my daughter was having surgery. We kept up as best we could during the day. By the time we got home I called my mother and told her what our plans were if anything else happened. Fortunately we did not have to implement that plan. In April 2002 I had the honor of visiting Ground Zero to pay my respects and of singing at a concert at Carnegie Hall in honor of all those lost and affected. And now I feel a very strong pull to return once again. I will never forget.

I did donate money in support of the memorial at Ground Zero. Hard to believe I was 10 at the time, and now I'm a part of the War on Terror. 9/11 definitely helped in my decision to join the military.

I was an assistant manager at Firestone in Houston. I remember opening the store and thinking, gosh this will be a slow day. Little did I know. I remember we had the local affliate, Channel 26 KRIV (Fox) on the television for it had the best morning updates for traffic and such. At first, I thought it was a stunt or prank. The more time wore on, the more it became real. The ironic thing is that this Firestone was (no longer there) in a mostly Pakistani/Indian neighborhood. I just remember the waiting room was so crowded by people that morning. No one said much of anything, but were were really busy by 7:30 am on. Very surreal day. I think I worked 12 hours that day.

I was on a plane that morning enroute from Tampa to Wilkes-Barre, PA. We landed in Cincinatti and were told to de-plane with all our belongings. I was sitting in the Delta Crown room there when the second plane hit. I remember being almost desperate to reach my wife to let her know I was ok. I'll never forget her breaking out crying when I finally got through an hour later. It's not a day I'll ever forget.  :flag:

It seems we're forgetting that people died and the Pentagon and Flight 93. We need to remember them also.

America as we knew it changed that day. Those 10 years and younger have grown up in a world different than we ever imagined.

The world changed on that horrible day. 9/11 was not just an American tragedy, it was the world's tragedy as well.
