As some of you might have already heard in the news, this year's Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to three outstanding physicists for their groundbreaking contribution to our understanding of complex systems, such as the climate.
One half is awarded to Giorgio Parisi (Italy) "for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales".
The other half is shared between Syukuro Manabe (Japan) and Klaus Hasselmann (Germany) "for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming". Manabe's and Hasselmann's work laid the foundation for today's climate models and our comprehension of the connection between man-made carbon emissions and global warming.
This award is a great recognition for climate science all around the world. If you want to read more, you can find the offical press release here: https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/2021/press-release/
