Too hot for AZ convicts???

#1 Postby j » Thu Sep 11, 2003 7:30 am

This may be old...but who cares:

It's even hotter than usual in Phoenix, 116 degrees sets a new record,
the Associated Press reports:

About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment
at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to
their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on
their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees
inside the week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as
sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzo't, an inmate who
has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago
started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is
not one bit sympathetic.

He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in
Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they didn't commit
any crimes, so shut your damned mouths. "

KIND OF PUTS THINGS IN
PERSPECTIVE DOESN'T IT?

You've got to love this Sheriff!

Their meals.......HoooDooogies, truly, they serve them Green Bologna, with one slice of American cheese, NO condiments, on white bread, 6 soda crackers and a glass of milk!

If every jail in the US was run like Maricopa County's, the crime rate would drop some 75%! "Gooooooooo JOE!"

Rigth on az...what we need is determent...take the damn Country Club atmosphere away and these street bums might think twice about crime.

The fact is that the majority of convicts are living a better life than before they went to jail!

I couldn't agree more. They need to be treated like the PRISONERS that they are.

Also, no cigarettes, no stuff mags, no tv except for the 0600, 1200 and 1800 news, no 10pm news.......Joe is ONE tough Sheriff, I would be HONORED to work for him ANYDAY!

I agree, they DO live better than those Americans living in poverty, Hmmmm.....makes one wonder, why "IS" the crime rate so high these days, are ppl trying on purpose to be locked up??

They should do that in all Dallas jail facilities so that maybe the crime rate would drop.

I think there is a breed of criminal out there that knows they can live better in jail than they are presently living, so what the heck...might as well rape and murder anything that walks. Hey...and forget the lesser crimes..they aren't worth the trouble because the prisons are too over crowded with repeat offenders to begin with! ..No room for the average scum bag.

This is true......I've known of a gentlemen (I use that term LOOSELY) who have commited some pretty serious crimes, such as my scum bag child molesting step brother...who BTW only served 3 years of a 15 years sentence, got out on *good behavior* until I fixed his sorry rear!!! Anyways, your right......the lesser criminals get off now with slap on the hand, actually, no they don't....they'd call a slap on the hand, ABUSE!

It should come as no surprise that Sheriff Joe is pretty much under constant death threats in his personal life.

I've reminded my son often about the risks of drinking and driving, and while my fears are of accidents and the impact it can have on your life, his are of spending time in tent city with Sheriff Joe.

Like him or not, Joe's tactics do make an impact.

Another thing Joe has done that has really put a bur under the saddle of many Maricopa County residents is Sheriff Joe's *arsenal* of weapons he's purchased for the MCSO. He bought an Armed Personnel Carrier, mounted on top is a 50 cal. machine gun......said he wanted it in case of another aerial attack, his main concern, the Palo Verde Nuclear Plant. He's also purchased, from the Army Surplus, numerous other high powered weapons, pieces of machinery at a HUGE discount saving Maricopa County tax payers untold thousands of dollars. And yet......the masses cry foul!

The heat issue reminds me of something an old clergyman said to me once:

"You think this is hot, wait till after you die!"

I just came across this and its perfect:

1. Comparisons

IN PRISON.......You get three meals a day.
AT WORK.........You get a break for 1 meal and you have
to pay for it.

IN PRISON.......You spend most of your life looking through
bars from inside wanting to get out.
AT WORK.........You spend most of your time wanting to get
out and go inside bars.

IN PRISON.......They allow your family and friends to visit.
AT WORK.........You cannot even speak to your family and friends.

IN PRISON.......You can watch TV and play games.
AT WORK.........You get fired for watching TV and playing games.
