I had the scare of my life today...

#1 Postby Guest » Thu Sep 18, 2003 9:53 am

I thought I was going to die this morning. On my way to school everyday, I drive on the interstate highway. This morning, a semi truck merged into the left lane, which was the lane I was travelling in. The nose of my car was just behind the tail end of his truck in the other lane. To avoid him from taking out the front end of my car when he carelessly pulled into my lane, I pulled over onto the median and slammed on my brakes. I guess my tires locked up because the next thing I knew I was doing a 360 in the middle of oncoming traffic! My car finally stopped spinning and I was at a dead stop FACING the oncoming traffic. I immediately lurched the car forward into the median. I cried my eyes out when it finally ended. I could not believe what had just happened. Thank you good Lord for helping me to get out of my predicament alive. I've never hugged Dustin as tight as I did when I came through my front door. I wish Chad was here, but he's at work. My mom was here watching Dustin, so she comforted me. I feel better now, not so upset anymore. But definitely leery of getting back on I-4 again. I know any angel was watching over me today.

Thank God you are ok. I know what its like to do a 360 and face on coming traffic. I did it on an icy interstate. It scares the living **** out of you.

What you described is probably the most common bonehead move truckers make out there. Let me guess... He didn't stop to see if you were ok, did he?

I'm so glad that you're okay! That would've frightened anyone!

Just keep hugging Dustin and maybe take it easy for the rest of the day!

I am so glad to hear that you are OK, Jen. I have had a few highway experiences myself that I feel lucky to have come away from unharmed.

Jen.....oh my, so very glad you're okay!!! You poor thing....those truckers are a menace. They think they own the road!

I had a similar scare at a 2 way intersection near our home. One direction, drivers going 40-45, had the right of way. But the other direction thought it was a 4 way stop, routinely. So they'd pull right out in front of you. All the time. I began calling the engineer's office. Last straw was when I was pregnant with my youngest, 7 months along, and Nina was almost 3 in her car seat. Car pulled right out in front of me. I did a 360 as I was trying to stop, and ended up in the other lane, going the opposite direction. Don't know why I did this, but I followed that other car. It was a woman driver, she was in her 50s or 60s, and I pulled up behind her at the next stop sign. I was hysterical I know and crying and as soon as she saw my stomach....well, let's just say I shook her up!!! I didn't curse but I stood there and said - hey that's a 2 way stop, not a 4 way.

Then I came home and called the Engineer's office one more time, while crying and hysterical I might add. The man I spoke was so nice, now calm down lady.....we'll make a note of this. And before you knew it, that intersection became a 4 way. When traffic backs up now at it, my hubby likes to say it's all my fault. I like to remind him he should be glad we all lived! All 3 of us......that was one day I was very shook and all b/c I felt so responsble for my child in the car seat and the one I was carrying!

Don't forget -- if you can't see his reflection in his mirrors, he can't see you either. He should have turned and checked his blind spot. Very reckless on his part. A semi should NEVER change lanes without making sure it's completely clear AND without signaling.

I am so glad you're okay.

OMG Jen!! Glad you are okay and I am thankful Dustin was not in the car!! I detest I-4. Something needs to be done about speeders on that HWY as well!! 18-wheelers think they own our Interstates these days, especially I-75 too. I was sandwiched in between two of those idiots this past summer. Believe me, they KNEW my anger too.

So glad to know you were not hurt!!

UGH!!!! I am very glad you are ok Jen!!! I used to travel I-80 to get to work everyday, and I have seen sooooo many accidents due to careless truck drivers! :grrr: I had to swerve onto the median one day to miss getting hit by one, but I guess after already putting myself in 2 ditches previously (I wasn't at fault!), I remembered what to do right that time and made it back on the road safely. There was definitely an angel watching over you! Take it easy today girl, I know how your nerves are when something like that happens!

So glad you were not hurt. I know that I-4 is terrible, been on it many times. It's not so bad in Volusia County, but Orange is a nightmare.
Be careful!!

I have been ran off of the road twice by Truckers. Both times my Wife and two Daughters were with me. THe first time, I was pulling a camper and there was road construction ahead and the left lane was closed. Well the trucker thought that he'd wait to get over until the very last second, and guess who just happened to be in his way. How thoughtless of me I guess. I was sent into the ditch to run over a few mile marker style poles and damn near rolling my van with camper behind.

I know how you felt Jen, Thank the good Lord you are still with us to tell the story.

Thanks for all your support and concern guys. What a crazy day. Well after all that happened this morning, I heard some strange noises from the car and pulled over to check it out. Nothing. When I got back in the car, it wouldn't start! LOL just my luck. So I walked a mile or two to a payphone and had a friend come pick me up. We stopped by the car again so we could check it out, and it started right up this time! I sure felt like an idiot, LOL. So I assume the car is fine. I go to the bank this afternoon and stop by the ATM. I get back in the car and again it won't start! I just wanted to scream in frustration. At least I didn't have to walk far to a phone. My mom came and got Dustin and then Chad's dad called a tow truck for me. He came up to the bank to wait with me and decided to check under the head. Turns out it was just some loose bolts on the battery. Car started up fine after he tightened them for me.

Finally, I'm home again, safe and sound with my little boy. And I am staying here for the rest of the day! Today is just not my day. We all have those days where we wish we had just stayed in bed all day. Hey, at least I can laugh about it now. Jsut one of those days................... LOL

Thanks for letting me get it out. :D

Jen, I am so sorry about your experience this morning!

I hear how heavy the traffic is on I-4. Sure is quite the interstate highway. In the 3 1/4 years I have been in central Florida... I have only been around and actually on the road with family members about five times when going to Disney World twice and Orlando International Aiport a few times since June 2000; otherwise I have no reason to go anywhere between Daytona Beach and Tampa.

How bad was the traffic after the event. I by not means am saying what you went through wasn't traumatic. I am interested in local news and you being in the 'Orlando viewing area,' like myself... it is interesting to know. :)
