WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The State Department reissued a worldwide caution Friday to remind Americans they could be targets of terror attacks around the globe and warning of the potential of threats against maritime interests.
"We are seeing increasing indications that al Qaeda is preparing to strike U.S. interests abroad," the caution said.
"We expect al Qaeda will strive for new attacks that will be more devastating than the September 11 (2001) attack, possibly involving non-conventional weapons such as chemical or biological agents. We also cannot rule out the potential for al Qaeda to attempt a second catastrophic attack within the U.S.," the State Department caution said.
The statement said potential terrorist attacks may involve commercial aircraft and maritime interests.
The State Department has issued dozens of travel warnings related specifically to al Qaeda threats. Many have warned against travel to specific countries including Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Indonesia and others.
The worldwide travel caution replaces one issued a year ago.
