FORT WORTH, Texas -- The average rush-hour driver wasted more than a full day -- about 26 hours -- sitting in traffic in 2001.
That's according to an annual report released Tuesday by the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University. That's an increase of four hours in the last five years.
According to the study of 75 U.S. urban areas, congestion cost Americans almost $70 billion in wasted time and gas.
Houston had the worst traffic delays in Texas, tying for 13th nationally with an average of 55 hours in 2001. Dallas-Fort Worth tied for 18th with 51 hours.
The report found that the average rush-hour driver in Los Angeles spent about 90 hours waiting in traffic in 2001, far more than anywhere else.
However, the study also found some areas of the country where gridlock eased, including San Antonio.
The report recommends more roads to handle increased demand, more bus and car pool lanes, and adjusted work hours for commuters.
