What about Rush?
Any opinions on the situation Rush finds himself in today---not the racial remark but the drug accusations. I really was shocked to wake up to that news.

The only accusations are that he is under investigation for prescription drugs. ABC spent 5 minutes tonight on national TV saying how bad this was and then 2 seconds at the end saying he hasn't actually been accused of anything. TYpical media....yell about the sensational and then murmur the CYA...

Yes, I do about both...
First of all, what the heck was ESPN trying to prove by hiring someone that doesn't know a thing about baseball? I thought that ABC's Monday Night Football was alittle out there when they hired Dennis Miller, but this one takes the cake. What did they think he was going to say? Rush probably shouldn't have even taken the job, but then again, since HE THINKS he knows everything, I'm not surprised. He still doesn't see how wrong he was to have said that and he never wil because it's his way or the highway. Everyone else's opinions are meaningless.
Secondly, about the drug scandal, I am skeptical because this all came about from an investigation done by the National Enquirer.
If it does come out to be true, then it just shows that other than being racist, he's a hypocrite as well.

Stephanie, I agree.
Just got finished reading about the accusations of drug abuse (Oxycontin) and illegal purchasing. Saw "National Enquirer" was the source and so I immediately dismissed it. Could be true, but I doubt it.
And I had no clue that Rush was on ESPN until all this stuff just came out about the McNabb comment he made. My first thought was, "Rush? Sports? What the heck?"
I first started listening to Rush's show (and enjoying it) during the first Gulf War when I could pick up his show on a Cincinnati station that reached KY. Haven't listened much lately, but I hear he's gone downhill. One of these days, maybe I'll tune in and find out.
"Dittohead" is a good term for his fans. They "ditto" every viewpoint he has instead of thinking for themselves. I agree with a lot of his points, but sometimes he's way out there.

The New York Times also
carried the story about the drugs. I didn't give any credence to the Enquirer, either, but the NYT is different.

I didn't know Rush Limbaugh was a football analysis for "ESPN's Monday Night Football Countdown" until this happened, either. I would have thought the news of him getting this position would have been a story over a month ago before he started with ESPN.
We knew that Dennis Miller was going to be on "ABC's Monday Night Football" before he started his tenure there.
For the record, as some of you may know, ABC owns ESPN. I just did a search and they (ABC) owns 80% of ESPN.

I'm as conservative as they come, but have never been a fan of Rush or his radio show (although the tv show was pretty good)...
As for his comments regarding Donovan McNabb, I tend to agree that McNabb is overrated....but I could say that about over half the starting QB's in the NFL. I always thought Dan Marino was overrated...as was Steve Young.
They were perfect fits for the offense they were in....which maximised their talents.
Would I want McNabb as starting QB is I were a team owner? Probably not....because I prefer QB's that are more in the mold of Brett Favre and Joe Montana...I've never seen the same "special something" in McNabb I saw in Montana/ Favre (not many have it...the ability to bring their team from behind in a money game), but his race has nothing to do with it....and that's what got Limbaugh in trouble. I could give my commentary on ESPN about McNabb, and never mention the fact he's African-American. I don't think the media hypes him because he's black....nor do they hype Mike Vick here in Atlanta.
Speaking of Vick, he has shown some of that "special something" spark that guys such as Elway, Montana, and Kenny Stabler were famous for....the ability to carry a team, and come from behind when they shouldn't.
I'll admit I was brought up believing that blacks shouldn't be the QB....but that's utter BS. Michael Vick is as good as they come....running and throwing the ball; and being a team leader when the chips are on the line...the ability to make everyone on his team rise beyond their talent level. That ability is the "something special" not many that play the game possess....that's what makes those that do great.

First of all...Rush is and has been all his life a HUGE football fan. He is very knowledgeable and a Sports junkie. I read his comments over and over again and found nothing "racist" about them. As O'reilly said last night, they may have been "racial" but THAT does not make him a Racist. This is all about a grand apportunity for the Rush haters (ala Jesse Jackson) to jump all over his back.
Now...onto the more serious accusations. I have a problem with the "truth" on this drug scandal. That is not to say that Rush is above being addicted to pain meds. This is a problem many people face, and often the result of legitimate prescription medicine being administered too long.
BUT....I asked myself...why would a rich, famous, extrememly powerful likeable man like Rush Limbaugh have to buy any prescription drug illegally? Don't you think if he went to his doctor, or any otther doctor for that matter and asked for whatever pain med he wanted or needed, that said doctor would gleefully prescribe away?
You or me, or the common slug off the street may not be afforded that same rather un-ethical distribution of drugs, but its a different story for the rich, powerful, and famous.
I do believe, that if he has a problem, he will confess to that, and shortly. I would not be so quick to jump on the "let's destroy Rush" bandwagon until the "facts" come out.

Tropical Storm,
Who knows if the drug allegations are true? However, the maid wore a wire twice so that the authorities could get info about the situation. The maid also saved emails and turned them over to the police .

A couple of points Rush has made today on his radio program:
· He claims what he said was definitely not racist…it was his opinion, and he is entitled to it. He claims that he is labeled a Homophobic, a Racist, a Bigot, etc…For no other reason than he is a Conservative. These are labels that Liberals want to pin on Conservatives automatically.
· He claims that McNab’s agent himself used race as a negotiating tool when re-negotiating his contract, but where was the outrage at that? The press reported it….but it was ok.
· A Philadelphia writer wrote a scathing article Tuesday about him. This was the same writer that a year ago wrote an article about Mcnab’s race as being an issue in his recognition as a great quarterback.
· The bottom line is Rush believes Mcnab is not that good…its his opinion…and he stated that and why he believes he is over rated.
· Also….a caller made a great comment to demonstrate the double standard in the media, and the indisputeable fact that if your black, the Media will not ever label you a Racist. But..let's remember back to Isaiah Thomas’ remrk back in the Larry Bird days which was, “If Larry Bird was black, he would just be another average basketball player”. In other words…because he is white, he was recognized as a much better player than he actually was. That was Thomas’ opinion, and nobody in the press labeled him a racist! Hmmmmmmmmmm?? Where was the outcry from the blacks for Thomas to be fired or resign for those racist remarks?
Double standard folks.
BTW...does anybody know how to spell Thomas' first name?

j....you hit the nail on the head with several points and I could just "ditto" for both of your posts so no need for a repeat there.
There's always been a double standard and this Rush thing is being blown way out of proportion IMO.
Regarding the drug usage, I find it hard to believe that he could pop over 4000 pills in 40 something days (or whatever the exact accusation is) and still be on the air perfectly coherent every day. I disagree with GD that he's gone downhill. I think he's been as sharp as ever and enjoy his show immensely. Unfortunately, I don't get to listen every day but I do when I can.
Of course, I'll wait for proof. I don't find the sources too reliable at the moment.

YES SG..and if you could hear him today, he is mad about what has happened. In typical Rush fashion though, he is systematically and articulately destroying the critics, and after you hear him out, (which Liberals can't stand to do), you would most likely end up saying..."Rush is right".
Good point about the drugs...those numbers would make him a walking piil factory. He is not acting like a man that has anything to fear, and I have a feeeling when the truth comes out, this will have been a set up.
As I have said before, he may very well have an addiction, but that in itself does not make Rush a terrible person, rather somebody that most members on this board would sympathize with.
You make great points about his coherance. Listening to him today, I hear a man that has all of his mind, and it is firing on all cylinders.
If you have followed Rush, you would know that this is a man that kept the fact that he was almost completely deaf from his listening audience for months because he did not want to stop doing what he loved to do. There were legions of Rush haters out there that noticed a chage in his on-air presence and abilities. Yeah...I would guess so when you can't even hear yourself speak and am watching words instead of hearing his callers. An amazing feat for a drug addict!
