Missing Mr. Potato Head back home

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Sat Oct 04, 2003 2:22 pm

NEWPORT, R.I. (Court TV) — Mr. Potato Head was a bit mashed but otherwise in tip-tater shape when he was returned home after being stolen from an estate.

The six-feet tall statue was taken last week from a posh 17-acre private estate where it stood. Police said someone found the famous potato in a field. It was returned with slight damage over the weekend.

The statue's owner, James Leach, reported the 150-pound statue missing after he heard his driveway alarm sounding at around 3 a.m. one morning last week. No arrests have been made in the disappearance.

The Mr. Potato Head statue is no ordinary tater. The well-heeled statue has had a distinguished stay in Rhode Island.

The state Tourism Division introduced the Mr. Potato Head figure in 2000 to bolster family tourism in Rhode Island. After the advertising campaign, several of the statues were auctioned off for charity.

Leach's statue was originally sponsored by the governor's office and sat in the statehouse. Mr. Potato Head moved to the private sector when Leach reportedly purchased it as a birthday gift for his son.

Since the spud's relocation to the Leach estate, many people have visited the statue and taken pictures with it, according to its owner.

LOL, 15 years ago, my friends and I would have
placed it in another schoolteacher friend's front
lawn, at night, while he slept soundly, and the
city police would have parked just down the
street, watching, and laugh hysterically...

When he's finished with his Public relations work, are they going to put him out to spud?
