FORT WORTH (Star-Telegram) - Residents of the Presbyterian Night Shelter account for the majority of active tuberculosis cases among the transient population in the county, according to a yearlong testing program at area shelters.
County health officials began aggressively screening Presbyterian Night Shelter residents for tuberculosis in 2002, the first time mandatory TB tests were given at a county shelter.
"While it's been a very labor-intensive project, I think a whole lot of good [has] been done by it," said Gerry Burgess, the county health department's division manager for tuberculosis elimination.
Shelter had 25 active TB cases in past year
