TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Galveston Causeway closed
A traffic fatality has closed the outbound lanes of the Galveston Causeway bridge; a second accident closed the inbound lanes. As of approximately noon today, the causeway is shut down to traffic in both directions. We will continue to monitor the situation and post updates and additional details as they become available.

TRAFFIC UPDATE: Inbound lanes on Galveston Causeway open, slow (12:25 pm)
We reported at noon today that a traffic fatality has closed the outbound lanes of the Galveston Causeway bridge; a second accident closed the inbound lanes. Those inbound lanes have now reopened, although traffic is moving very slowly. The outbound lanes remain closed as rescue and recovery continues. We will continue to monitor the situation and post updates and additional details as they become available

Update -- got this in email this afternoon:

"the accident on the causeway, was terrible, a lil 10yr boy died, and his parents injured badly. what happened was the boy and family was going outbound from leaving here at utmb from a doc's appt., when they went over the hump on the causeway a street sweeper was in the side of the road and the sweeper either swerved or something which caused the lil green car the parents and boy was in to stop or slow way down, when that happened here comes a big newpaper truck fool force over the causeway, not knowing the car had slowed down and ran right on top if it crushing it and killing the lil boy, it was terrible, then it caused a pile of of 3-4 cars, the parents were badly injured and taken to the hospital and so was the lil boy, he was gone but they still tried working on him. there was also another person in another car that was injured too from the pile-up. poor family!"
