a follow up on Col. West

#1 Postby j » Fri Nov 21, 2003 8:04 am

Dear Americans,

20,000 of you have gone to bat for Lt. Col. Allen West. Your
petitions have been sent to Secretary Rumsfeld.

I wrote you a few days ago with the story of Col. West.
He's an Army battalion commander in Iraq. He scared a prisoner into
giving him information about a terrorist attack, and saved the
lives of countless U.S. soldiers...by firing his gun into the air.

Is threatening the use of force -- to save the lives of your troops --
a crime? Apparently so.

Lt. Col. West is being charged with communicating a threat and
aggravated assault.

My thanks go to over 20,000 of you who have responded and
signed a petition to the Secretary of Defense, Donald
Rumsfeld, asking him to see that the charges against Lt.
Col. West are dropped.

Lt. Col. West faces a horrible choice: He can resign
from the Army immediately, forfeiting his retirement...
or he could go to prison for up to 8 years.

Cox Newspapers reports that an intelligence officer close to the case,
Capt. Sheri Day, says it has been nearly impossible to get information
out of prisoners. "Our hands are tied behind our backs," Day said.
"It didn't take the detainees long to figure out our techniques
and procedures. They knew we had to stay in certain boundaries
(of treatment) because we're Americans. They knew they could sit
all day long and not say anything and eventually walk free."

Please tell Secretary Rumsfeld that to save American lives...by
foiling a terrorist attack...by scaring a terrorist, should not
result in a prison sentence.

And what about the terrorists? What message does it send them?
If they know we're not going to be tough with them, then they
can just wait us out. And more Americans will die.

Please join me and send your message to Sec. Rumsfeld and ask him
to stop this court martial today.

I'll leave you with a comment from one of Col. West's own men.
"...I would follow him anywhere," said Spc. Jesus Garcia.

West stopped a terrorist attack, and he saved his men's lives. He did
exactly what he was supposed to do. The man should be given a
parade, not a court martial. Let's let Sec. Rumsfeld know how
important this is. Please sign the petition today, and be sure
to let your friends and family know that they need to do the same.

Thank you for your support.

For America,

Bruce Eberle

Is there no more information than what we had last week? Just wondering if this is progressing at all.

I posted this mainly because a lot of people may not have seen this the first time. IMO this man is a hero, not a criminal. His intention was to save many lives, and his method involved harming not even one.

But to answer your question, No..I do not believe anything has progressed since last week.

it will destroy morale if he is prosecuted. i have heard that the rules are so rigid as far as being nice to prisoners, that our soldiers are actually afraid to interrogate them

It's up to Rumsfeld to step in here and make a stand.

Agreed 100% he is a hero, and a real American.
