OMG...this is shocking...this occurred 3 hours ago...

Car Hanging Off Side Of I-471 Bridge

Reported by: 9News
Web produced by: Neil Relyea
Photographed by: 9News
11/22/03 7:15:25 PM

9News is live on the scene on the "Big Mac" or Daniel Carter Beard bridge where a car is hanging off the side of the bridge in the southbound lane of I-471.
Rescue crews are on the scene but it's still not known if anyone is inside the vehicle.

The accident happened shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday on the bridge which spans the Ohio River connecting Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Traffic is almost at a standstill as southbound lanes have been reduced to a single lane.

They did get the car off of the bridge...traffic now reopened, but it is incredible...the video is just unbelieveable.......

Jeremy - OMG, how terrible. We drive that bridge a lot, from out here in Anderson to downtown Cincinnati, traveling thru northern KY. Sounds complicated but many people use I 471 now. And nearby is a very popular nightspot now, in Newport, KY.

We were watching an old video/movie tonight. Didn't even know this story was going on. Thanks for the link.

Yes newport is a very popular area, with the levee, aquarium and of course the riverboats...you guys sure have a roundabout way of going into town...however I don't blame ya...I'd do the same thing...

Jeremy - if you look on a map, it's shorter and easier for us to cross the I 275 bridge near Coney Island into KY. Then take I-471 into downtown Cincinnati, crossing the river again, this time on the Big Mac bridge. When I 471 was first built it took some convincing for folks to consider going this way to get to Mt. Washington and Anderson! The other way is along the river, on Columbia Parkway. Which is fine, but it's just not the interstate. Takes more time and there are several lights.

We have several bridges coming into downtown Cincinnati, from northern KY. The main one is the I 75/I 71 bridge, called the Brent Spence. Two decks, one for each way of traffic. The Big Mac looks like McDonald's golden arches. It's on the eastern side of downtown Cincinnati. If that helps any. There is a round hotel near the I 75/I 71 bridge, that could resemble a water tower possibly? Maybe Jeremy can help you out Jacki.

Mary, lol, I just told Jeremy yesterday that I've been through his town, and Cincy, on the way home from where I have family in Kentucky, it's in Florence, and the watertower is the one that says "Florence Y'All"

Jacki - now I understand! Yes that water tower is near the Florence Mall! I was thinking you meant near the Ohio River. Didn't know you had family in Northern KY. That's so close to me! About 30 minutes away. TLC is near there too. Small world isn't it?

The other Cincinatti stations should cover this story, too.

Linda - we travel it everytime we want to go anywhere near downtown. Hubby travels it twice daily, to and from work. It's a very safe bridge too. The rails or I should say walls are somewhat low - picture concrete dividers on the interstate - and that has always made me a little leery but other than that, it's a good bridge. The one that freaks me out is the Brent Spence bridge, the I 75/I 71 one. People just fly thru there, and you're right beside a semi too. I heard when 2 semi's are side by side on the Brent S. bridge, there is only - get this - 3 feet between them. See why that bridge needs to be replaced?

OH that reminds me of the Huey P. Long bridge in New Orleans. It is a very HIGH bridge and is 2-lanes. When an 18 wheeler is in front of you his tires are scraping the edge. I would not dare pass it. Also the guard railing is not very good. I will never go over that bridge. Thank goodness they built the MS River Bridge.

I pray and hope nobody was injured or killed in that accident! Having lived in and near Cincy, too, my folks and I have traveled over the Big Mac!

Another infamous area (regarding I-75 that is) is the Cut-in-the-Hill area of northern Kentucky...when there's been an accident or vehicle breakdown...talk about the back-up, also!

Mary

I'll be glad to clear that up...

1. The interstate that goes past Florence is I-75/71.

2. The building near I-75/71 in Covington is a Clarion Hotel. The building has a rotating restaurant on the top floor, and it kinda resembles a deck of round playing chips.

3. I-471 goes north/south across Campbell County, I live in Boone County. I-275 connects 75 and 471 on the south end.

BTW, the other stations did wind up covering this, and no one was seriously injured.
