Criminals follow bank customers home

2003-02-28 18:08:52
Just because you make it to the bank and back without being hijacked, mugged or shot in a cash heist, it doesn't mean that you are safe. Police have warned that criminals are watching you as you make bank transactions and will follow you to your home or business in order to rob you

'Criminals have become ruthless'

2003-03-03 17:46:18
"No one is safe any more - not even members of the royal family. Criminals these days have become so ruthless". This is the opinion of Zulu monarch Goodwill Zwelithini, who says that he understands society's need to punish criminals.

Mother shot while shielding baby from attack

2003-03-04 14:01:03
Police believe an attack on a bakkie near the KwaZulu-Natal town of Mandini may have been motivated by ongoing faction fighting in the area. A group of men apparently opened fire on a bakkie transporting workers home, killing three people. One woman used her body to shield her baby from the hail of bullets but was shot in the back.

Three-month-old baby escapes bloody massacre

A three-month-old baby has survived an ambush at Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal which left three people dead and four injured. A bakkie - used as a taxi to transport a group of municipal workers - was attacked by men with AK47s and 9mm handguns.

Cops held after impostor racket bust

2003-03-03 09:56:03
Two Durban police officers have been arrested for allegedly helping bogus cops to rip off businessmen by staging illegal raids. The arrests came after investigations into a gang of "policemen" who are believed to have stolen hundreds of thousands of rands from businesses in Durban in the past month, according to Superintendent Vasie Naidu.

Amanzi, I have been in regular communication with a British-South African for about 1 1/2 years, and his description of what's going on around him is terrifying enough; not only does he speak of lawlessness and widespread looting/robbery, but he says that the former Afrikaans "secret police" are far from eliminated, and are still actively engaged in terrorism of their own.

He refuses to leave; he was born in S.A., and it is his home...but he lives in constant fear, and has obtained two Belgian Shepherds (on my advice) for warning/protection. He describes living in his house as "self-imposed house arrest".

And at the same time, we in the U.S. have to watch and listen to Nelson Mandela telling US what to do?

My dear friend You are so correct. It truly is "house arrest" you lock yourself in at night (if you get into your house without being attacked that is) you lock yourself in during the day.

The goings on in the parliament of South Africa are enough to drive any sane person totally mad.

I would still feel better if Nelson was the President (he is an extraordianry man) the current PM I do not like, he has had to many vile contacts with people like Godaffi for my liking and has a rather harsh opinion of the minority race.

The Broederbond (the brother hood) will never be eliminated totally (the funny thing is that if you look into there history there aim was to get rid of the ENGLISH,and sub-due not eliminate the native Black people, they have this archaic thought that anyone who is not Afrikaaner is below them and needs to be controlled. They did very terrible things to many many Native's and were the founders and builders of apartheid. ) I think they are something very similar to the problem of the KKK here.

The problem gets worse though because before the fall of apartheid they held ALL the major political and business positions (if you had a dark skin or spoke English you could forget about having a good career!) In the few years that South Africa has been a democracy there is no way they could have dug out all those bad apples, so they are still in high ranking positions. So on the one end of the scale you have total hate for the native race and on the other you have some who are seeking retribution (of course there needs to be justice!! for what was done to so many!) towards the white race. It is an underlying tenseness that is tangeable on a daily basis. It is so difficult for a family like mine, because we are not Afrikaans totally and we are Not Totally english, we are South Africans and when the majority of the people can get over this whole attitude of "what are you" then maybe I would move back. I am hoping that the generation that has been born now will be able to finally put to rest most of this ugliness.

The crime is all too real to me and scares the death out of me. I am and always will be African! We have been ridiculed for moving to America, have been told we are running away and we should help and re-build our nation. I do feel guilty sometimes, but the fact of the matter remains and always will, I am not prepared to die fighting for the few possesions I have and more importantly my son needs to be brought up in a country where hatered is not on every face you pass on the street!

Amanzi, My friend is a journalist, who was sympathetic to the cause of total enfranchisement for the blacks in South Africa, and smuggled dozens of articles out-of-country under the noses of the Afrikaaners; but that, and being of British ancestry, has not exactly "endeared" him and his to the "Broederbond". Just a few months ago, his home was shot up (while he was in another S.A city visiting his daughter)...he has been followed, seen uinauthorized "survellance" cars within plain sight of his home, and lives in a constant state of fear.

He asked me for help in securing his residence, but, other than the dogs, my suggestions cannot be implemented (no private firearms permitted, alarm systems would never make it through Customs, etc.).

You will forgive my not sharing specific details, but he requested as much anonymity as possible...yet wants the world to know what is happening in his country.

Amanzi, I feel that in coming here, you have done the "right thing" for yourself and your son; maybe, in the fullness of time, he will be enabled to go back to clean out the riff-raff? As to the KKK, their true numbers and reach is minimal at best, fraught with internal warring factions and having to compete for members with the equally lame "neo-Nazis" and/or private "militias"...all of which are under constant Federal and state survellance. The "Broederbond", by contrast, is cohesive, well-entrenched, well-trained and ruthless, and may not be as easily contained or dismissed.

Streetsoldier, I can sympathise with your friend 100% I seems as if all the people who want to help end up getting hurt.

The secrets of the past will never fully come out. I have always thought the Broederbond will never just shut up and go away. There country has been taken away from them and been given back to some degree to the majority race these people are fanatics and will not roll over and play dead!

South Africans are a breed like no other. Toughness is inbred and they are not afraid of face to face confrontation or violence (even the Afrikaans kids beat the heck out of each other, toughness is considered a trade mark of a man)

I can understand his request for anonymity (if I was him I would be petrified these are not a nice bunch of people to be on the wrong side of)

The rest of the world needs to know what is going on there (I feel violated because my homeland the very essence of my past and future has been ripped away from me because of such people!)

If he is living in SA why cant he have alarm systems (they have armed response in South Africa because the private security companies are more reliable than the police)

He can buy a firearm (crumbs we had more guns in our house than toilet paper!) If he needs a firearm contact me and I will get one to him!

The alarm systems I would have sent him are beyond "state-of-the-art", Amanzi...they have internal motion detectors, UV and infrared scanning and may be wired to area-containment devices outside ("caltrops", or "tashibishi" which damage tires and anyone's foot unwisely placed to step on them). He would have to have local asssistance to hook them up (they are set for AC wiring, and require special work to convert to DC), and he doesn't trust the contractors..who may "leak" the set-up to the Afrikaaners.

And he has no faith in public/private security, as the "Broederbond" are still a heavy influence in these fields.

As to weapons, this may be a recent development...I have noticed a lot of ex-S.A. ordnance being sold here as "surplus" (having been a soldier and a policeman years back, I still keep up with developments in the respective fields  )., which may herald a general disarmament policy by the new PM...?

Oh dear, he really is not in a nice postion!

You are right that kind of thing would never get passed customs.

I have some friends who are ex S.A.P who have left the force because of the political "polotics" in the force and also because they cant support there families on the low wages. A few of them have started private security companies (I can assure you they are not Afrikaaners)

As far as arms go, I have not kept abreast with old Thabo Mbeki's polocies regarding the situation. I have just always been surrounded by fire-arms in all shapes and kinds. My husband was in the army for 2 years, my grand parents were both majors, and my father in law has his own aresenal!

You just have to know the right people over there and you can buy ANYTHING! for the right price.

I truly hope he can get some kind of protection, otherwise he needs to apply to the USA for political assylum.

These are not the sorts of people who you take lightly. If I were him I would get out, and I would get out NOW.

Hijacker takes teenagers on a 'hell ride'

2003-03-05 09:00:02
Two Pietermaritzburg teenagers are considering trauma counselling after they were abducted at gunpoint busy shopping complex and driven to an outlying KwaZulu-Natal township by a hijacker who allegedly told them he "just wanted a lift".

Hospital 'turned away' critically injured man

2003-03-05 10:52:45
A critically injured accident victim has allegedly been denied admission to a private hospital in Richards Bay because his family could not pay the required R100 000 deposit. Two hours later the 20-year-old waiter was declared dead at a state hospital 24km away

Don't give up, say pair who fought hijackers
2003-03-06 07:13:23

A Rondebosch woman and her boyfriend who fell prey to three hijackers on Saturday say people in similar situations should not behave like victims when they are confronted with danger.Clare Weightman, 21, and Kenneth Fyfe, 24, were confronted by three men about 10.15pm in the parking lot outside their block of flats.
"We had just stopped and we heard footsteps, so I slammed the door shut," said Fyfe. "One of the men came round to my window and demanded the car keys. He stuck a gun against the window."

Weightman said another man came to her side of the car and told her to give him her handbag.

"I did not want to give him everything that was in my bag, so I threw some of things out on the floor. But he saw what I was doing. He pointed the gun at me and told me to just give it to him. He then passed the gun to the other man standing at Kenneth's window."

With the gun firmly against Fyfe's head, Weightman said, she remained calm.

"But a few moments later, Kenneth had grabbed the gun and was struggling with one of the men.

"Just then a shot rang out. It was not aimed at me, but it ricocheted off something and hit me in the arm," she said.

Fyfe said one of the suspects had bitten him on his back trying to get the gun, a 9mm pistol. But he held onto it and later ended up pointing it at the attackers. Fyfe said he had been given anti-retrovirals because of the bite.

Weightman, who had not realised she had been shot, said her arm felt numb, "like I slammed it against something".

She fell to her knees and screamed for help and the men fled on foot with only Weightman's wallet, which contained R12,50.

The pair agreed that they were not easily going to surrender their possessions to the men.

"If everyone just hands over their things to criminals, then they will do it more often because they know it will be easy," said Weightman.

Fyfe said he realised "things could have played out differently if the suspects had more than one gun".

"But I still feel people should not make it easy for criminals to manipulate them."
