Students Hold Vigil For Slain McKinney Students
McKINNEY, Texas (KXAS NBC5) -- Students at McKinney North High School returned to campus on Monday, just three days after two of their classmates were among four people killed execution style on Friday.
Grief councelors are at the campus to assist students in dealing with the loss.
The flag on campus was lowered to half-staff while grieving students have been stopping to pay respects to their classmates at a makeshift memorial.
On Friday, Rosa Barbosa, 46, Mark Barbosa, 25, and Austin York, 18, were pronounced dead at the scene while Matthew Self, 17, was taken by medical helicopter to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where he died Saturday.
Police said all of the victims were found bound and gagged and were shot in the head.
"They were just real fine people," said Bill Self, 68, a relative of the teenage victim and the neighbor of Rosa Barbosa. "She's been a good neighbor. There's never been any trouble that we know about."
Bill Self said he was asleep in his recliner when he realized emergency vehicles were outside. "If something like that happened next door, it could very easily happen here," he said.
A tearful Carole Mendez, mother of Mark Barbosa, was among relatives at the scene Saturday as police continued investigating. Mendez, 40, declined to discuss the crime.
"It would be better to remember all the good things and not how his life ended," said Mendez, who lives in Westminster.
She described Barbosa, the oldest of her four sons, as "very inspirational to his brothers. He was the best big brother that they could have ever had."
One of his brothers, Robert Barbosa, 22, lived at the home with him and their aunt. Robert Barbosa discovered the bodies, a friend said.
Police are searching for a tan 1999 Chevrolet crew cab pickup believed to have been taken at the time of the shooting. The truck's license plate is 3CPJ17. Police said the truck has chrome running boards, other chrome detailing and a toolbox.
