The weather and your eating habits

#1 Postby azsnowman » Mon Apr 19, 2004 5:54 pm

Here's a topic that I've never seen discussed before, "The weather and your eating habits!"

What brought this to mind is, this past weekend we had some friends over for dinner, I made fried chicken, mashed potatoes, milk gravy and corn....our friends commented that they had never had my fried chicken before, I told them that I only fix it when the weather is cool, windy.....ya know, "Comfort food" so to speak. We eat a lot of soups, stews, Mexican food, beans etc. during the fall, winter months. In the spring, summer, we BBQ a "LOT!" and eat a lot of salads, fresh fruits etc. Our friends thought this was RIDICULOUS, they said that they eat what they want, when they want.

So...the question is, does the weather dictate what kind of foods you eat?

Sounds like my diet Dennis - very seasonal. I think heavy foods like stews, pot roasts etc. are heavy and to me not very desirable on a hot summer day.

However, give me carbs and I'm happy anyday!

Well Dennis, I do tend to eat less in the summer and more soups and chili and stews in the cooler weather months. And I do clearly drink more liquids in the summer, too!

I will also remind you that during my 23 years in keeping my full-blown weather station going 24-hours a day back in Illinois, I gave up many-a-meal so I could keep an eye on the storm or give my full 100% attention to the weather of the moment.

LOL John!!

Great thread Dennis. I go by the same guidelines as you and Michelle. Although, I am always out and about in the summertime and exercise more in the winter time to work off the extra holiday pounds and the sit on the couch and watch TV extra pounds. LOL!!

Ditto! If I saved soups, stews, Mexican food, etc. for the colder months, I'd rarely get them. I must have some form of Mexican food at least a few times a week as well. :)

Really depends on my mood, and not the weather.

In fact, I'm hungry NOW!! (and I just ate 2 hours ago!!!) ...

I guess you could call me one, too, especially when I am in a happy mood. It like "Katy bare the kitchen door."

unless I am in water, I don't want to be outside during the winter! It's TOO darn HOT!!

I'm the same way as some of you..I eat stew, chilli, etc...in the fall/winter.

Couldn't agree more Dennis! I prepare our family meals according to the wx too. Summer - light fare, lots of salads, sometimes we grill out, etc. Winter - pot roasts, casseroles, etc. Something to use the oven for! Added warmth. I usually bake cookies or a cake more often when it's cold than when it's hot. Now one dish Jim wishes I'd learn how to make really well in the heat of the summer - chilled gaspatcha soup (sp?). From scratch, not canned soup. And chill the bowls he says too......add a salad and watermelon, and he's a happy fellow. Have a good recipe for that?

Sunnyday, I hope you feel like eating something
that you like, soon! ;)

I'm a seasonal eater, as well...now that it's
warmer, I'm looking for "cool" foods, like, potato
salad, ham (cold is FINE), salads, and such.

Chili and stew looks better to me in winter!
