Scents/Incense/Headaches!

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Wed Jun 23, 2004 9:09 am

Does anyone else get an instant headache when they smell certain scents (heavily perfumed people, incense, walking into a Bath & Body Works store, etc.)?

I've suffered from headaches since I was a teen, not daily or even weekly but I've had my fair share of migraines. Even had two aura's (an intense migraine with blurred vision).

Our local Mall just added a new store, an Aroma type one. Oh lovely. My kids are suddenly into incense, scented candles, etc. Laura came home with a dozen incense sticks and before I could stop her she was shoving 3 types in my nose, here Mom smell this one, how about this one, etc. I was so nauseous, instantly! Head throbbing.... When I have a really bad headache I swear I want to stick my in the freezer.....please don't laugh. Cold air seems to relieve the pain, along with meds of course.

We had the A/C on but this morning just coming down my stairs to smell the lingering incense they had burned days ago, sent me running for the Excedrin bottle! LOL And I opened all the windows, heck with the A/C. My kids think I'm making this up! I'm not.

Just wanted to see if anyone else hates all this scented stuff too. Thanks for reading.

Too much can be really rough on me, but I'm not too sensitive to it. Tabu perfume, on the other hand...YUCK! I remember a dorm mate in college used to wear it and I thought it stunk to high heaven! Worse scent I've ever smelled.

What I can't tolerate is old/used book stores. I don't know what it is -- maybe it's the dust, maybe it's the moldiness. But all it takes is less than five minutes in one and I've got to run for the restroom...and I'll leave it at that. :) It's not like I *eat* the books.

I can't recall getting a headache from a particular scent, but I know several people that won't go into a candle/card shop for just that very reason. I enjoy the different scents, particularly around Christmas, but I agree it can be a bit much.

Thanks girls - I knew I wasn't alone. Stephanie - you seem to be the only one so far that can tolerate this! I'm working on a killer headache again today. Ugh! My kids are gone to our area's amusement park, so I hid their incense. LOL You know what will hit the fan when they return. I just had to get it out of the main rooms of our house. Like you Shawn, I'm nearly running to the bathroom gagging too!

Yep! Forgot I told you about that. Thing is my girls won't settle on ONE scent. No they have to mix them all up together. Yowsa.....woohee, I think I'd better stock up on Excedrin!!!

This all reminds me of when Nina got into Bath & Body Works a long time ago (she's nearly 17 now). She'd spend hours it seemed like in the bathroom. Then come breezing downstairs. This strong scent following her. Her dad would declare - WHAT IS THAT AWFUL SMELL? As if you left a rotten potato in the pantry or something....he he. She'd take one look at him and run back to the bathroom crying. I'd gently say - now Nina, try to pick one scent, and then use that scent for soap, lotion, cologne, etc. But no, just like the incense now, she mixed them all up into a lovely recipe, of her own making.

Anyone want to come to my house? You'd better bring a clothespin!!! I swear the other day I walked around with my nose pinched, just to get thru the family room. The looks I got.....LOL

I remember when I was in elementary school and my Mom would get Avon. They would enclose those little sample packets of perfume. Well, one day my friends and I decided to test them all! NOT a good idea - smelled like we just came from a whorehouse!

Nah, I don't go for all that fancy stuff. For me there's nothing like the fragrance of a sweaty body.

Nah - that was mild for me! I can swear like a sailor when the time calls for it - like everyday at work! LOL!

I love Bath & Body Works Lindaloo. I liked it better when they first opened - they had "normal" scents like Daffodil, Rose, Pear, Vanilla, etc. Now they have all kinds of combinations.

Ed - OOH BABY!!

Ed - LOL

Well I for one have rarely used room fresheners or deodorizers. I prefer just opening a window to clear the indoor air. Now my mom got into those sprays, since she and my dad were heavy smokers years ago. That must have been it. But I really just prefer fresh air!

Linda - I can barely walk into a B & B W store! Especially when they're trying to give you a dab of this or a squirt of that. No thank you, I'm here for my daughter....LOL But to each his own.

Stephanie - cussing like a sailor? Again, you're just shocking me.....j/k.

Oh gosh yes! I get terrible headaches from smells..

Dont laugh, but we get a mushroom growing in our garden (it is the oddest looking thing, all orange and creeepy looking!) It is called a mulch mushroom. As soon as one blooms it gives me severe headaches and it smells like rotten meat.. im serious. I thought the smell was coming from the garbage or something. The smell stays in my nose for hours and thats all I can smell.

Perfume stores are just a no-no for me, I will have a bad headache within a few minutes. Funny thing is, I have an extremely acute sense of smell. I can recognise a perfume name, and the main ingredients pretty quickly. I was told I should have been what they call a "nose" in the perfume industry.... umm sure and I would have become a drug addict as well, just to deal with the head.

Miss Mary, cold helps my headaches as well. I soak a wash cloth in ice-water and then put it over my eyes and forehead. It really does seem to help.

I can really relate to this topic. Mary, incense gives me an instant headache!!!!!!!!! It is so intense. Can't stand it. I can relate to the "head in the freezer". Cold really does help.

I love natural scents like the "Sweet Pea" from BBW. Some candles really set me off too.

Mary, have the girls burn their incense just in their rooms with a window open and a fan on!!!!!!

I think the only alternative is to breath thru your mouth and not thru your nose!!!!!!
