Not ready for Hurricane Hollow Tropical Weather

#1 Postby coriolis » Tue Aug 03, 2004 6:56 pm

For those of us who are counting storms....

Does Alex count as a named tropical storm AND a hurricane, or just as a hurricane? I suppose that it counts as both, right?

So the score would be 1-1-0 Correct?

I would think that it would obviously count as both. :)

Why wouldn't it be TS Alex JUL and Hurricane Alex AUG?

its NOT that way Eric, you misinterpreted what I said. ALEX as a whole (in all phases, TD, TS and Hurricane) counts for JUL because the system formed in JUL.

I was about to say the same thing, but Ed is correct about the scoreboard to date. Which is 1-1-0 (ie..1NS, 1H, 0IH)

Perhaps a better title would have been "question regarding Alex" or something.

I thought that was why because it formed in July.

This could have been posted in Hurricane Hollow though. No one will attack you there for asking a question coriolis.

Alex counting as both a TS and Hurricane seems misleading to me. That implies that there were two storms when it was actually just one that progressed to the next level. Is this the standard method of counting? Just curious.

Jen, this is a VERY good question.

The total number of storms Includes all Tropical Storms, Hurricanes and intense Hurricanes, The Category of Hurricanes includes all systems which reach hurricane status (combined CAT 1-5) and the Intense Hurricane category Inclues ONLY those canes which are CAT 3 or stronger.

Where a 12-8-4 season for example would imply that 12 Total named storms formed, 8 of those named storms became Hurricanes, and 4 of those Hurricanes were category 3 or stronger (thus the term Major Hurricane).

it can be misleading, however I hope this helps.

Yes, stormchaser, we are at 1-1-1 now that Alex has reached major hurricane status.

He is the first in everything so far this year.
