Steph, there was good reason to get the ground troops moving ahead of schedule; Iraq was sending missiles into Kuwait before our air campaign, and our troops there were "sitting ducks".
Rather than accept these preemptive strikes from the missiles Dr. Blix said Saddam didn't have, we moved...and we're still moving.
As to the rift within the Administration, it wouldn't do any good to dwell publically on this, even if it is partly true; Iraq would take ANY opportunity to use such info in support of saving their sorry hides. GW is correct in keeping things close to the vest.

You're absolutely right - GW should keep it as if everything is going well within the staff - and perhaps it truly is. Strife will only help to create more confusion and uncertainty amongst the constituents.
It just kind of goes along with other things that have been discussed on these boards about time length, strategy, etc.
