Aches and pains.....

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Fri Apr 11, 2003 9:46 am

This is very off topic and medical related. Just wondered if any of you have experienced these ailments and what you did to make them better:

1. Tennis elbow (I have this now after cleaning carpets in 7 rooms, stairs and a long hallway at xmas time; I'll never do that again!).

2. Tired/restless leg syndrome (when your legs ache so much at bedtime, as if you've walked all day long).

So far I've rested the arm/elbow and tried exercising for the leg problem. Don't really want to go to my Internist since our med insurance isn't that great now (high copays, etc.). I should mention my age too, 47. Maybe it's a sign of getting older? Ugh, hate to admit that if it is. LOL

Thanks in advance to anyone that replies. And oh, feel free to add your own aches/pain situation (within reason, :) ), that's why I titled it aches and pains.

I have restless leg syndrome! I find that taking iron has helped it ( I read it on a website). Unfortunately, it also constipates you. It really does drive me crazy! Usually when I go to bed, I'll sleep on my stomach with my legs stretched out has helped also. It's a good thing I like to sleep on my stomach already!

Thanks Stephanie - I'll try that. Recently I saw an add for Calcium supplements stating they help alleviate restless LS so since I don't take in much dairy I'm taking 1200 mg daily of Citracal. But I might be low on iron too.

Also, if someone could massage your legs for you. Helps get the circulation going and helps ease the achiness. Taking two advil or motrin would help also.

Ok, my aches now:

I get severe charlie horses in my feet and calves when I stretch out in the bed at night. They hurt so bad. Any advice???

Bfez,

Eat more potassium. I get those too when I don't eat a banana a day.

Gives you potassium.

LOL MF you should call it thereputic extract of cactus!

Miss Mary have you tried Arnica oil? I use it after I have had a long ballet class and I get really sore knees and calf muscles. It is excellent to rub on, and it seems to help me.

mf_dolfin - tequila? Mmmmm, never thought of that. Oh wait, a beer does help!!!! LOL By the way, I noticed on the chat page you live in Clearwater. My father-in-law lives nearby in Indian Rocks Beach. We've vacationed there many times. Beautiful area down there!

Thanks for the banana and oil tip. Not together though....ewww, this thread could get quite comical.

We do have a hottub so I have no excuse there. Need to use it more I guess.

But will be watching this thread to find out what people have to say about Tired/restless leg syndrome, cause that one does get me every now and again... I think most of the problem with that, as far as with me is a Lack of excersise

Restless legs...

#13 Postby azskyman » Fri Apr 11, 2003 4:31 pm

Hi Mary...

Kathy has had restless leg syndrome for a couple thousand years...but the relief she finds is from the prescription drug clonazapam. Works like a charm...I guess it is basically a drug original used for those with siezures of different types, but it has been the first thing to give her relief in many a year!

Might check it out with the doc.

I'll have to keep that in mind myself Steve!

They also say that certain medications help to bring on the symptoms even more so, like antidepressants. I've noticed that I've pretty much had restless legs since being on Prozac.

I've been able to deal with it, but if it is really becoming a problem for you Mary, especially if it is disturbing your sleep, then I would check with the doctor about the medication. Fortunately, I haven't had a problem with sleeping.

Side effects...

#16 Postby azskyman » Sat Apr 12, 2003 8:59 am

Of course the side effects of quieting your legs include hangover, halitosis, vomiting, suicidal tendencies, diarhea, constipation, nausea, unplanned pregnancy, loss of vision and hearing, hair growth, loss of hair, body odor, and severe acne...but hey, when you wake up in the morning you feel great after a good night's rest!

My husband has Restless Leg Syndrome. He would shake his legs so hard & often our bed felt like one of those cheap motel vibrating beds!

His dr. told him to walk 15 minutes before going to bed to tire his legs out. It works and now I get a good nights sleep!

GREAT!!!!

With side effects like that, I won't have to worry about waking anyone else in bed next to me...I'd have it all to myself!

Cajun-I've found that if I do walk around alittle bit it does subside for a bit.

It's not restless leg syndrome in my case but during my pre-school and Kindergarten time period of life I would get achy cramps in my legs...(found out it was a side-effect to my having hay fever!)...but have since outgrown that part of my allergy, fortunately! My mother would have to often before bedtime...while I was lying on my bed...she would massage my leg or legs depending on which one was giving me grief at the time...and that brought me relief! :) Thank you very much Mom! :D

One time I remember having played in my sandbox out in the back yard one time while living in Cincinnati and I could hardly get out of it when finished playing because of the leg cramping. :o

Hi all. Thought I'd post an update on my own topic!!! I'm proud to report that I've been walking again on the treadmill, daily, for over 2 weeks now. This time, I vow not to quit (something I did back in the Fall, ugh). I'm up to 2.5 miles a day and my goal is to get up to 4 miles a day. Happy to report all my leg pain symptoms are now gone - yeah! No doctor visit needed......I was trying my own approach first. And as an added benefit, I now have more energy. I'm not dragging thru my days......LOL

Still have that nagging tennis elbow on occasion, I'll never clean carpets again, let me tell you all - I've learned my lesson there!!!

I also thought with Spring upon us and Summer soon, there might be other aches and pains to get advice for.....and an outlet for Bill to post one of his comical replies!
