Fire near Moody Gardens (Galveston)

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Mon Sep 20, 2004 8:30 pm

Just in case any Hou/Galvers can see the smoke from where they are on the mainland (I know it's visible from Bayou Vista and Texas City):

There's a HUGE conflagration out near Moody Gardens. The building right in front of the convention center was a huge ball of flames when I saw it just a short time ago (me, and about 300 other Galvestonians). As far as I can tell (and remember) from the last time I was at Moody, looking down and around at the island from the top floor, there was an old warehouse between the Lone Star Flight Museum and Moody Gardens. That's what was on fire. I say "old," but it may very well have still been in use. I'm not really sure.

I think everybody and their monkey drove out there to see what was going on. Traffic was atrocious (as if I have room to speak...I was part of the problem :) ). Most people seemed to be concerned that it was something at Moody Gardens (there was a lot of smoke right in that area and the fire was massive) and relieved when they found out it wasn't.

Anyways -- still several hours before 9PM news and I'm not sure they've cover it or not. So, if you were wondering.... :)

LOL Duck about driving out. You should have seen all the people that drove by our neighbor's house when a tree fell during Frances. The whole state came.

How far is that from you?

On my way home from school tonight, I was on the Belt and there was a wreck that was blocking all the north bound lanes.. Traffic was backed up all to hell... It was bad, thank God I was going the other way!

Brent -- My best estimate...about 6 miles from home, but I was already in the vicinity to start with. It was an easier drive back home though...less traffic. :)

YG -- I'll probably see that on the news also.

I saw that.... the fire is on the ground where they are planning to build the new Schlitterbahn water park. Workers were taking apart the old warehouse, and apparently there was welding going on - they suspect thats what started the blaze. Apparently there was asbestos in the building, which the workers were removing also - I wonder if that poses a health threat if it burns....
