Burned bodies found in car

OAK CLIFF, Texas - Police are investigating the deaths of two people found in a burning vehicle in a wooded area of East Oak Cliff Tuesday afternoon.

The bodies were charred so badly the sex of the victims could not be determined, and they will have to be identified through dental records or DNA samples, police said.

The white, 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe was still on fire when Dallas Fire Rescue arrived at a wooded area near Merrell Avenue and Sargeant Road about one mile south of downtown Dallas.

"We believe the gasoline tank may have been shot," Sgt. Gary Kirkpatrick observed. He noted the fire accelerated quickly.

Authorities said car is registered to someone in the Brownsville area, but police aren't sure if that registration is current.

A woman driving by the scene about 3:15 p.m. called 9-1-1 when she saw smoke billowing out of the woods. The witness said she saw a man driving away from the scene in a beige sedan.

Police are still investigating the matter.
