Motorcycle riders?

#1 Postby tronbunny » Sun Oct 17, 2004 12:06 am

I just got my first motorcycle and am learning to ride.
I figured it would be natural for motorcycle riders to be intersted in the weather, as it effects them so much more than "cagers".
So what do you ride, how long, how often and what goodies do you have on your bike?

I have a 2004 Suzuki Volusia 800.
have Memphis Fats 19" windshield, Kury ISO wings to replace front pegs.
Waiting on saddlebags and windshield bags.
Hubby starts his MSF course monday, I'll go next month, I think.
Just doing a little bit of practice in a parking lot, but I haven't hit the streets yet, I'm not ready, but Hubby commutes 22mi each way to/from work.

Better 'Double Up' and head to Daytona Beach for Biketoberfest. I'll be there on my 1200cc Kawasaki Voyager.

"how long"
When I first got my drivers licence, I took the 'driving part' of the test on my first bike. It was only a "Super 90" Honda but it was also 1965 at the time. I've owned a bunch throughout the years.

"what goodies"
The Kawasaki Voyager (VII) is a "Touring Machine." Standard are AM/FM/Cassette with quad stereo & intercom. Both driver and passenger have helmet speakers/mikes with individual controls. Electronic Cruse Control, Full Fairing/Windshield and both trunk and saddle bags.

The Voyager sounds pretty similar to the Honda Gold Wing. First time I was one about a decade ago, I thought the whole intercom/helmet system was pretty cool.

The VII is a nice bike but the front end gets a little squirrely at about 120 and slipping it into high gear didn't help much. Nice ride 'tho.

About the only time you need speed like that is when traveling through the Everglades during 'skeeter season. One problem, if there's a gator on the highway, your history.

I have a Suzuki Bandit 1200. My wife has a Kawasaki Ninja 500R. Mine is a sport touring class, while her's is a Sport class. Her's is a true beginners bike and @ 52 HP, not a Ninja that most people relate to.

Question for you, and not trying to discourage you, really. Have you dropped your bike yet? My wife dropped hers in the typical fashion. Pulling out...went for the brake and twisted the throttle while reaching. Luckily, she went into a yard, hit a guy wire, but luckily, didn't get hurt to bad.

Clutch control! Number one biggie for new riders, and the MSF course spends the 1st couple of hours (at least) on nothing but that. We tried to get her in but the classes are all filled up.

My only advice...don't hit the street till you instinctively feel that sweet spot in the clutch. Once you have that down, you are home free.

One more thing. ALWAYS expect vehicles around you to do the absolute most idiotic maneuver you can think of, and not even give you a second look.

Ahhh the infamous dropped bike...
Yuppers!
Twice now.
Busted the turn signal the first time, no crash bars.
Got the crash bars and now I'm not as freaked out about it.
Those durn turns and the front brake will get you every time!
I can now pick up this roughly 550lb monster by myself.

j, how long have you two had your bikes?
Love that Voyager, Hunter. Like a 2 wheeled RV.

No Biketoberfest for us, this year. We're just not ready for that kind of action or time to cruise yet. But that day will come!

Y'all keep the shiny side up!

j, I couldn't agree more. Knowledge and experience. Something else I've noticed, if your only an adequate driver you'll make a terrible (and short lived) biker. It's imperative that you know what's happening around you in all directions at all times. It's true even when parked. Bikers are still considered targets in many areas.

Wnghs2007, It's fun to ride up and down mainstreet on your scooter. You and the misses can still have a blast standing on the sidewalks with the other thousands of good people all out for the same reason. A good time. You don't need to arrive on a bike, take your car/truck and just mingle with the good folks :)

Supposed to rain tomorrow, hope to be there on Thursday/Friday.

Can't believe there aren't any Harley riders on the board.

Congrats on your new bike!

I rode to Bike Week in Daytona twice (will never do it again-my butt was numb the entire time! ) Did go down once, also. Road rash is not fun. I swear I picked asphalt out of my leg for months-be careful!

I actually picked up the new Harley catalog just the other day(decided that I'm treating myself for my birthday-one of my friends is getting tired of me borrowing his spare bike) Hubby doesn't ride anymore :( He's taken up boating instead

Enjoy your new bike!

Hey, it wasn't funny when it happened, lol
But, then again, I was young and didn't realize that I was breakable, lol.
I'm much more cautious now that I'm older and it takes ALOT longer to heal.
or are you laughing because I ride a harley?

Harleys are OK...
I'm too cheap to pay that kind of moeny for a bike.
I wouldn't buy a Hummer, either.

Hubby passed his MSF today!

I'll shoot for Bike Week in feb.

As for Iron Butt Syndrome, get a better seat!
I'm drooling over the Mustang Wide Touring Seat with backrest

I've got my eye on a Corbin gunfighter. Close to $400 so that's why I still have the stinking stock seat!

Sargent makes another great custom seat.
