Officials say he used sword; The Colony teen apparently didn't resist
By JENNIFER EMILY / The Dallas Morning News
FRISCO, Texas – Police believe Charles Anthony Owen stabbed 18-year-old Tamara Jobes to death with his sword.
They also believe she wanted him to.
A railroad worker found the high school senior's body last weekend on the tracks that separate Frisco and The Colony, police said. She was stabbed multiple times in the back above her shoulder blades. She had no defensive wounds.
Police searched several cities for Mr. Owen after a friend of Ms. Jobes' from The Colony High School told police about seeing them together near the railroad tracks. The friend did not know Mr. Owen but provided a description that helped investigators find him.
Police tracked him Tuesday afternoon to his downtown Sherman loft, where he shot a Frisco police detective trying to serve an arrest warrant. Officers discovered his body inside after a seven-hour standoff.
Police said Mr. Owen's parents were in the hallway and suspect they were warning their son that authorities were coming. They were still in the hallway when the shooting began, police said, but were not injured.
Chief Renshaw quoted Mr. Owen's mother as telling police that her son said: "Mom, I've done a bad thing. I've killed a girl and left her on the tracks. I'm not coming out alive."
Mr. Owen's parents could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Authorities said no decisions have been made about whether to bring charges against the parents.
As officers approached the building, Mr. Owen fired a single shot from a high-powered rifle that struck Frisco Detective Leah Apple in the hip. Officers fired back with 17 shots.
Seven hours later, Sherman police found Mr. Owen inside, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Near his body lay two handguns and the rifle.
Detective Apple underwent surgery Wednesday night at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where she had been listed earlier in critical but stable condition. She also had surgery Tuesday night at a Sherman hospital.
Police recovered what they believe is the murder weapon in his apartment. A lab will conduct tests to confirm whether it was used in the slaying.
Police said they have no doubt Mr. Owen killed Ms. Jobes, but they don't know why she would want to die.
Investigators have not determined the extent of their relationship except that they were acquaintances. Her family did not know Mr. Owen, the chief said. At least two people who lived in Mr. Owen's building said they had seen Ms. Jobes there recently. One said they appeared to be boyfriend and girlfriend.
Police thought they might not uncover a motive for the killing until they found Mr. Owen's journal inside his apartment.
"He had a journal, and he and Ms. Jobes had a discussion about what occurred on the tracks. She agreed to it, and he carried it out," Chief Renshaw said, referring to Mr. Owen's writings. "We can't refute it."
Because of the physical evidence, he said, "It makes sense that it was an assisted suicide."
The chief said the act was murder even if Ms. Jobes agreed to it. He said that because of the circumstances of Ms. Jobes' death, officers were not surprised by the journal.
"It didn't shock us," he said.
Chief Renshaw had not read the journal and declined to comment further about its contents other than to say Mr. Owen wrote that he used a sword to kill Ms. Jobes and that he knew someone had seen them together.
Police did not know Wednesday how many times she was stabbed. The autopsy report was not available.
Donnelle Owen, 17, said Tuesday before his cousin was found dead that Mr. Owen collected swords and used to play with them at family reunions.
She said she last spoke to him two months ago.
"I kind of try to stay away from talking to him," she said. "He's pretty crazy."
She described him as "gothic" and said he often wore a Superman shirt and a trench coat.
Ms. Owen said she had heard her cousin say he was dating someone named Tammy.
Accounts from Ms. Jobes' friends at The Colony High School suggested Ms. Jobes was happy and did her best to cheer others up when they were down. One teacher described her as a loner. She too was known to dress in black and wear black fingernail polish.
Her family declined to comment Wednesday at their home.
