Discovery series featuring Pinetop-Lakeside to air Tuesday

PINETOP-LAKESIDE - The segment of "Monster Machines" filmed in Pinetop-Lakeside featuring the Town's burn box will air on Discovery Channel on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.




The Discovery Channel was in town in July to film the new 50,000-pound Air Curtain Destructor - reportedly the biggest in the market - purchased to reduce the growing pile of green waste being collected at the green waste collection and recycling center in the Town Commerce Park.
At that time, Frank Miller, president of High Country Green Waste, the collection site contractor, told the Town Council that residents and contractors were dropping off more branches, stumps and needles than it could process, causing the pile and fire danger to grow. Town staff estimated the pile at about 60,000 cubic yards.
Miller had been using a smaller burner, which handles about 40 tons per day, on loan from Forest Lakes, however, he could only keep pace with the new material coming in and could not process the existing material.
The new burner has triple the capacity of the one on loan and burns the green waste with very little discernible smoke. A combination of burning and grinding has substantially reduced the size of the pile.
The Town of Pinetop-Lakeside has been pushing for a regional green waste facility. Town officials met with representatives from the City of Show Low, Navajo County and U.S. Forest Service to try to identify possible sites. The group came up with three potentials sites: the area of the Show Low Airport which is part of the city's land exchange, the pit on Porter Mountain Road and a site on First Knoll.
Meanwhile, the Town is pleased to be the subject of a national television show. "This is a good opportunity for the town to get some national recognition without a major forest fire," Public Facilities Supervisor Tom Thomas said at the time.

You know, instead of burning green waste and releasing more carbon into the air, why doesn't Pinetop convert it into compost and then sell it like Sierra Vista does with its green waste. Makes more sense environmentally and could also make some money for the town.
