DETROIT — A small plane crashed on the city's east side Monday afternoon, hitting at least two houses in a residential neighborhood and sparking fires, police said.
The plane went down near Detroit City Airport (search) about 2 p.m. EST, Detroit police Sgt. John Claybourne said.
Two people believed to be on board escaped from the plane, Claybourne said, but details of their conditions weren't immediately available.
The roof of one house was completely burned off, and another house appeared to be nearly gutted by fire. The mangled remains of the aircraft rested on charred ground across the street from one of the homes.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the plane was trying to take off or land from the airport, Claybourne said.
A message seeking additional information was left with the Federal Aviation Administration (search).

This is bizarre, but an almost exact same thing occurred near Atlanta this afternoon. A small Piper took off from KPDK (Peachtree Dekalb airport) just NE of Atlanta....experienced engine problems, and crashed on top of a house short of the runway while attempting an emergency landing at 3:02 p.m. this afternoon.
Amazingly, no one was seriously injured....the pilot was the only person onboard, and he walked away with minor injuries. The sight of a small plane sitting atop a housetop as if placed there by some giant was an amazing sight on the news this evening
There's a slideshow about the plane crash at the WSB TV website...

Yeah... I saw the pictures on the news tonight... it was amazing. Almost like the roof was the runway.
