FALLUJA, Iraq (CNN) -- As many as 1,000 insurgents have been killed in the six-day battle for Falluja, an operation that is "almost finished," Iraqi national security adviser Kasim Dawood said Saturday.
But terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and a lieutenant, Abdullah Junabi, both escaped, he said.
Also around 17 US soldiers haved been killed in this operation. But the main mastermind of the beheadings of people and believed to be the leader of the bombings is not in that city.

24 US Killed? I haven't seen the very latest about the US count and that is why I said 17 the last number I saw.

I've heard 22-25 killed and up to 200 wounded.
This enemy may be one of the worst that we have faced. Taking a city with this low of casualties speaks volumes about our troops, but also says just how horrible the enemy is at waging war. Now, there is no excuse for not finishing off the insurgency

Many insurgents escaped before the operation began. The big question is if AL-ZARQAWI was there just before it started or he was well away from there because of a tip by someone that the US was going to make the operation.

This was more a symbolic victory then a hard victory against the insurgents. They knew we were coming and sneaked out all that they could. Falluja had been a symbolic capital of the insurgents and taking it back has proven our resolve. The fight is far from over.

The offensive against Fallujah killed at least 24 American troops and an estimated 1,000 insurgents, and rebel attacks elsewhere -- especially in the northern city of Mosul -- have forced the Americans to shift troops away from Fallujah.
