AM Weather...Remember?

#1 Postby azskyman » Mon May 05, 2003 11:23 pm

Back before many of you were even born there was a weather program put together in a mobile studio near Silver Spring, Maryland.

There were no radar graphics, no digital motion imagery, not much of anything except three NOAA meteorologists who gave us one heck of a good look at the weather expected for the day in the ways they could, using the visuals of the day.

I met Wayne Winston, one of the "OCM's" on that show with a friend of mine for lunch at a SUBWAY or something like it back at a conference in 1988.

Joan Van Ahn was the brunette who not only did a great job with the aviation portion of the weather presentation, but I think I fell in love with her for just being so immersed in weather as a woman.

And the third player...this is where I need help. I think his name was Carl...but I could not swear to it. Carl ????....just what was his last name?

Well for those of you who weren't being fed strained vegetables and Similac at that time, does anyone remember Carl's name?

It's one of those pieces of business that won't keep me awake at night, but would be nice to be put to rest before I am someday.

By the way...I think AM Weather was replaced by Bloomberg's market news about 1989 or so. Anybody remember that?

Whoooaaa.. Time now to hit the hay and have sweet dreams about Joanie's ability to point at those cold fronts on the map using that pointer stick with real authority!

Wish I could help Steve...my idea of "AM Weather" is that it's only worth watching if Melissa Barrington shows up in one of her "postage-stamp" skirts! :o

His name is Carl Arredondo...and did a terrific job as an AM Anchor in '88.This is when the WxChannel was coming into it's own...Hurricane Hugo in '89,was the first real live feed of the Fury of a landfalling CONUS 'Cane..then came Andrew in '92 and of course,I was in Hawaii during 'Iniki' at the same time. The Wx Ch was top doggie until the Fluffy '96 Meltdown.Joan did a terrific job with AV Reports, could decipher METAR and helped with the infusion of FAA/METAR Reports for 'Discovery CH 'Wings' "Pilot Brief" 20 and 40min after the hour, which I use.
Carl is a Native born Texan and got his Degree from St Thomas Univ in Houston. He's a 'Cane freak like me...so he is on my list of Favs.He won an
AMS Media Award in yr 2000 after leaving TWC.He now is Cheif OCM/Met at WWL-TV in New Orleans...Great Place for Carl! The 'Big Easy' and 'Canes go together like Chickory Coffee and Beignes at Cafe du Monde!

I remember watching AM Weather and seeing Wayne Winston, Joan Van Ahn and Carl Arredondo on my local PBS (WGBH-TV 2) in Boston right before I left for school some mornings. It was the first program on Monday through Friday from 6:45am to 7:00am. I am not sure when their peak was, but I was 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 years old/in the second grade in 1986. I loved the pointers they used, too. Does anyone know how many years it was on for?

Before Carl's last name was mentioned by Arizwx, I was tryied for several of seconds to think who it was, knew I really couldn't. :) With all three of their full names, it jogs my memory. :)

Great thread! 8)

Ah Steve you bring back good memories!! They did do a great job of the weather before TWC came into it's own. I was rather upset when they quit doing it!!

Gosh...I remember Carl Arredondo from TWC...and I don't think that was the guy I am referring to. But then, my memory fades me.

Wayne and Joan stayed at work at NESDIS in Silver Spring, I think. Maybe I can track down their e-mail addresses and see if they can verify.

Thanks!

would watch AM Weather every morning before I went to work and he went to school-I suspect that was one reason why he decided to major in Atmospheric Sciences at the UofA (he graduates in two weeks).

Bonnie, AZ mentioned that Carl Arredondo is the Chief Meteorologist at WWL-TV 4 in New Orleans. I can't remember Arredondo being on TWC.

I enjoy finding out where former national OCMs have gone. For example, Bonne McLaughlin from TWC has been at WIAT-TV 42 in Birmingham, Alabama for awhile.

Dr. Bob Sheet, former National Hurricane Center Director is employeed by the local ABC affilate here in the Orlando TV market, only see him when there is a tropical system approaching Florida and/or the United States.
