Among area city flags, Irving's flies highest

By DAN KOLLER / Dallas Morning News DFW Quick

IRVING, Texas - The North American Vexillological Association, a group of flag enthusiasts, has decided Irving has the best municipal flag in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

NAVA recently polled its members on the design qualities of 150 U.S. cities' flags, and Irving finished 17th overall.

"Well, that's great," said Mayor Joe Putnam. "I'm glad to know someone likes it."

Garland had the worst score of any area city, placing 86th, but a Garland official took issue with that. Dorothy White, Garland's public information officer, said NAVA members rated an out-of-date flag bearing the Garland city seal.

"We have the utmost respect for that city seal, but the flag that flies at City Hall bears our city logo," she said. "We adopted that logo in the early 1990s."

Garland had plenty of company in NAVA's doghouse. Participants rated the flags on a scale of 0 to 10, and more than two-thirds received a score lower than 5.

As one participant summed it up, "American city flags are, generally speaking, a disaster."
