Woman Charged With Running Down Boys Who Hit SUV With Golf Ball

POSTED: 12:42 pm EST December 6, 2004

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A woman ran over two teenage brothers after they accidentally hit her sport utility vehicle with the golf ball they were bouncing in a parking lot, officials said, leaving one of the boys with life-threatening injuries.

Isiah Grayer, 14, and his 16-year-old twin stepbrothers, Justin and Jamel Marshman, were bouncing the golf ball in a shopping center parking lot Sunday afternoon when it went astray and struck a sport utility vehicle driven by Kathy Feaganes Allen, 47, St. Johns County sheriff's Deputy Greg Suchy said.

Suchy said no damage was done, and the boys apologized and began to walk away. Allen started to drive away, but suddenly made a U-turn, ran over a median and struck Grayer, causing severe injuries, and Justin Marshman before knocking over a light pole, Suchy said.

She then drove after Jamel Marshman, crossing two medians and striking a utility box before her SUV stopped in a ditch, Suchy said. The boy ran away and was not struck.

Witness Russell McPhee said Allen accelerated to hit the boys.

"She charged them," he said. "This was the most deliberate act."

McPhee said he yelled at Allen to stay where she was when she got out of her car.

"After she ran them down, she got out of the car and lit a cigarette like a movie star," he said. "She watched all three of (the boys) just lying there."

Allen then used Terry Gerspch's cell phone to call her husband. Gerspch said Allen seemed unfazed.

"She was as calm as anything," she said. "She said the boys were throwing rocks at her car."

McPhee said Jamel, the uninjured brother, ran over to Allen's car and confronted her.

"He didn't get physical with her," he said. "He just kept asking 'Why? Why did you do this?"'

A judge ordered Allen held without bail Monday on three counts of attempted murder. She is being represented by the St. Johns County Public Defender's Office, which did not immediately return a call Monday seeking comment.

Grayer was in critical condition Monday at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville. Justin Marshman was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Flagler Hospital.

Unreal!! This is an outrage and she should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. She used her vehicle as a deadly weapon to intentionally cause bodily harm. The fact that this was children makes it even worse!! IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!!!

I was going to my Mothers house one night and some kids threw water balloons at me. Hit me in the face. When I stopped they were horrified because they did not mean to hit me but were playing games and they said "I got in the way"

You and me both!!!

Can we say MANDATORY ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES before they put her in the electric chair or whatever FL uses now? Wait, we don't need to waste the money!!!!

I'm not sure about other states, but if it was here in Texas if one of those boys dies it would be Capital Murder punishable by death.

Anyone want to bet me that she's not going to use a temporary insanity defense? Anyone?? Worst part is, she probably did lose it, at least for the moment. There's no rational explanation here. She just flipped, and now we're going to hear all about her tortured life and whatnot.

I don't care what the heck happened to her, nothing changes the fact that she tried to kill 3 young boys! Do I think she's crazy? Without a doubt! But she deserves ANYTHING she gets... sick #$#%&!!!

Agreed 100%

All that over a golf ball hitting her SUV. She must have PMS the way she was acting.

That reminds me of a story about a lady who smeared hot, steamy fries on a 4-year-old boy's face after he accidently dumped his shake on her clothes.

People shouldn't take their frustrations out on someone who did something to them accidentally, no matter what their clam is (mental retardation, mental instability, PMS, divorce, break-up, etc.), Otherwise, results can be tragic.

Of course not, but that would take restraint and knowing right from wrong, which most people have. But depending on the degree of mental handicap or instability, someone might not be able to make that judgment. Not making excuses for her, mind you. Rather, just theorizing about what would make someone do something like this. Makes no sense. I'd bet that she was already cooking well before the golf ball, something else set her off, so the first person who got in her way, no matter how slight, was going to get it.

This reminds me a little of a case we had down here about 10 years ago, give or take. Morning rush hour, a guy with no previous criminal record, got out of his car at a red light, calmly walked up to the car behind him, and shot and killed the driver. Didn't know him, didn't have a run-in with him, no road rage, totally unprovoked. I don't remember if it ever came out what set him off. All I remember is he was convicted and sentenced to death. I remember some outrage, but there was also a lot of fear that this could have happened to any of us.

but if you have that kind of emotional problem, you're not supposed to be able to get a driver's license in the state of Florida.

I saw her on the noon news here in Atlanta, and to be honest....she looked like a very mean woman; cold, heartless, possibly psychotic.

possibly psychotic? she runs a couple of kids over, takes out a light pole and a junction box and then smokes a cigarette...

sounds like textbook psychotic....

This is why imho women should not drive. They are dangerous enough when not in a murderous rage.

hahaha... just teasing...
