Are any of you as irritated by this FCAT thing as I am?
In my son's school, they spend weeks "teaching the test". Why dont they just include the subject matter in their regular curriculum????
It's driving me nuts.

Teaching the test is just another indication of how screwed up our education system is! Alicia, I agree with you. If they taught the material the way it's supposed to be taught then they wouldn't have to worry about the friggen test.
My youngest daughter is a HS Freshman and this is the first year she's been in the public school system. She's been breezing through so far but it's because they don't them work nearly as hard as they did in her private school. We are lucky in that she is self-motivated and really wants to learn. The standard at her school seems to be "show up and graduate"... It's a shame that we set that kind of example before releasing them into the real world.....

time for a timely rant
The FCAT is about as mentally challenging as using the bathroom properly. However...
it has not been standardized and forcing it on the grades below high school is simply inane. ((There are bigger issues like firing all the incompetent and creative teachers on the elementary and middle school level.)) Basically this test doesn't have any guidelines because it wasn't out there long enough. Its only merit is you'd have to be drooling and eating raw bacon before you'd fail it.
Somehow, teachers have kids that fail it. Mostly it is because the students are stupid. They don't like reading. They like drooling and eating raw meat products. Usually while singing a song with their mouth full... Part of the reason is the teachers don't teach responsibility or work ethic in the classroom. They are too busy being creative and feeding kids the equivelent of chewed intellectual mush.
I had a fifth grade teacher who made us color and do creative exercises. I do not know what of or why. This pretty much continues till 9th grade, unless you know how to read in which case you get an education outside of school.
Bring back latin.
Get rid of PE.
Teach history.

I had to take the FCAT and I will be the first to tell you it is the most pointless thing ever.
The teachers are technically not supposed to teach the test. The FCAT is based on the SSS (Sunshine State Standards) for Reading, Mathematics, and Science education. The teachers are supposed to teach the STANDARDS (like every state), and then only do a couple of "this is what the exam will look like" things. However, they feel it is a shortcut way to just teach the test.
I will admit that there are some teachers who have their own methods, and they are typically the nationally certified ones.

They need latin in elementary school. That way in between chewing on blocks and eating glue they can hear the story about the mule....
Mulus Paulum portat!
Paulus mulum portat!
Mulus et Paulus in via ambulant.
=D
[[edited because my latin is poor because I didn't have it in elementary school]]
