Cockatiel

About a week ago I started seeing a Cockatiel flying around in my backyard. I went to my vet and he gave me a bird net. I have been trying to catch this bird everyday. Yesterday I finally caught him.

I went to PetSmart and bought him a cage. He was out of sorts yesterday and kept trying to bite me. Last night while I was watching TV he started talking. He said "Whatcha doing" and then he started barking like a dog. He whistles that charge (da da da da CHARGE!!) tune and the Andy Griffith song. LOL!!

I have run an ad in the paper this morning to try and find his owner. I know whoever had this bird spent alot of time with him and has to be just sick over losing him.

He is thin and I have fed him fruit and gave him some vitamins. Had to spray him down with warm water and spray him for mites (just in case).

He seems to be doing fine today and adjusting. Hopefully, the owner will see the ad and respond. He has unique markings for a Cockatiel so only the owner would know his color.

Sounds like a great little bird. Well done for trying (and succeeding to catch him). The fact that he has unusual markings will make it much easier to trace the owner. Good for you!

I pray and hope his owner sees your ad and contacts you! Don't grow too attached to him, Wxbuddy, but enjoy his company while you have him!

I hope the owner sees your ad and claims the poor thing.Also,it must be something with these birds and the "Andy Griffith" theme song.I had a cockatiel(which sadly got away) and he picked up on that song immediately.I also have a friend who has a cockatiel and yes,this bird is very fluent in that song!

I stayed at a friend's cousin's house during Thanksgiving when we went to Dallas. She has a cockatiel also. He didn't say anything that night, but the next morning, I was the first one up and dressed. I went out into the living room to watch the news. As soon as I walked into the room, he greeted me with the Charge! bit and a wolfwhistle. It was so cute...I cracked up and woke everyone else up!

I had a Cocketiel when I was growing up.. And the thing did nothing but sing the Andy Griffith theme over and over and over and over.. lol

I have another Cockatiel and a MaCaw. She (Cockatiel) does not do a thing but whistle like the guys do at women. My MaCaw is VERY VERY vocal and picked up everything on the TV. I had to move him out of the living room and away from the TV when he told my Mother she was a mean old lady. LOL!! Unfortunately, I had to put him in the same room as the new Cockatiel, so I hope when I get home he has not taught him bad things.

Great job catching him and trying to find his owner. Andy Griffith song is easy for them. It is whistling. They whistle easier than they talk. Males are more likely to talk than females. They do have great personalities though don't they?

Yes weathermom they do have great personalities. You are correct about the male and female. The males are vocal and whistle. The females whistle but are harder to teach and they never talk. That is how I determined that this one is a male.

Spent a few years managing a pet shop before I had my kids. I can't tell you how many people came in to post signs for missing birds. They would forget the bird was on their shoulder and walk outside. Had two customers who had the same bird, one came in for supplies for a bird they had found and couldn't find the owner of. Some time later I had a customer come in for a new bird because theirs had flown away. It was the words the bird said that made me realize that we were talking about the same bird. If I remember right the original owners let the new family keep him because they figured he had gotten used to the new family and didn't want to confuse him any further. I guess the point is, be careful with your birds.

Well said weathermom and I agree. I have travel carriers for my birds. I bought a playpen for my original Cockatiel. She stays on it and plays but only when I am at home. The Macaw has a playground with a perch. I am sure you have seen these. He is hardly ever in his cage and does not try to fly out the door. He will go to his cage at night though to sleep. lol. He never soils the house and uses his playground. He is a good boy.

A female cockatiel flew on to my fence late last summer and easily let me catch her. I tried the paper and SPCA, etc. and never found her owner. She joined my parakeet - "Birdie Num-Num" - and "BJ the Blue Jay" (12 years old and makes the exact sound of my oven timer and our neighborhood hawks. He also says "C'mon.")

The cockatiels really are sweet birds. I hope you find the owner, but what a hoot to hear that bird talk.

How cool! I have a 16+ year old cockatiel - Petey Bird (or sometimes Son-of-a-Biatch if he won't shut up!). They are some kind of cool birds too. When we had to put our poor old Travis dog down over a year ago, Petey went into mourning and I swear he'll never be the same. He'd follow that dog all over the house and if Trav was sleeping, Petey would take advantage and clean his whiskers and toe hairs. Good ole Trav never lifted a paw to him. Just rolled his eyes and put up with it.
