How often do you work out?

New "health guide lines" suggest at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

I don't, but I have good intentions!!!

Actually I am going to start walking on our treadmill/clothes hanger this weekend to determine if I can actually handle sustained walking at speeds(since my accident in feb.).

Take it easy now!!! Work up slowly...

I had a similar experience. It took a year before I could work out. I now workout five times a week, and depending on which workout I do, thirty to forty five minutes each day.

You can be assured I will take it easy, even though I am one to push myself when I am in these situations. Doc said it isn't going to get any better than it is so I will have to work into as fast a pace as it can handle and just hold it there. I figure some is better than none.

Exactly! Some people do make the mistake of trying to push their bodies further that they can really go.

I "gazelle" usually for 10-15 minutes at a time once or twice a day. I don't do it every day but I try for at least every other day. While I haven't lost any weight according to the scale I am fitting in some clothes I haven't been able to wear for awhile. :D I really like the Gazelle. It's very easy on your knees and you can work on different parts of your body.

I just got back from the doctor and he said that even 3-10 minute intervals are better than no workouts at all.

I love my Firm workouts - I've been using them for about 10 years now!

When I am out on my crossing I pace back and forth for 20 minutes or so before the kids ever start coming thru. I continue to pace between the groups of kids. I also pace in the afternoons for about 20 minutes after the kids leave school. I am required to be on my post at 6:55am and stay till 8:15 am for the morning and in the afternoonI am there at 2:35pm stay till 3:25pm. So I get about 40-45 minutes of walking done each day this way.

5 years ago I began walking everyday. Or when the wx was good. Then we bought a treadmill. Suddenly I had no excuses not to walk daily. For several years I walked 30 minutes per day, about 2.5 miles each time. Within 2 weeks, I felt great. Daily walking gave me so much energy. So much that I didn't need a late afternoon pick-me-up cup of real tea or coffee! So much that I needed to continue walking on vacations! Finally, so much that I now slept more soundly than I ever did before in my entire life.

Sigh.....but I've fallen out of the habit of walking. Keep saying I need to get back to it. 2 out 4 family members use the treadmill so it's still a wise investment.

I remember seeing a jogger on xmas day once, running in the snow on the way back from Church. I thought he was nuts and even said so outloud - look at that crazy guy, running on xmas! This was before I consistently walked each day and saw the benefits of it. Suddenly I understood why that nut was running on xmas day!

I think I just gave myself a pep talk - I vow to start walking. Today!

With me going full time here in the next week or 2 with Pinetop PD, I'm working out every other day, 1 hour per.......30 minutes of HARD cardio, treadmill at 4 mph @ a 9% incline, then on to the Natilus machines, a circuit of 5 machines, 10 sets of 10 reps each, then BACK on the treadmill for a 4.5 mph brisk walk @ a 12% incline.......not TOO shaby for a SMOKER and a OLD fart eh? BTW....I've been on this for 2 weeks, I've shed 18 LBS :larrow: YES...."18 lbs" in 2 weeks, I feel like a MILLION dollars (except for the back of course *sigh*)

90 minutes a day can be really tough to fit into a work schedule. For example, on T/Th I work (including travel time) 7a.m.-10:30p.m. I do have a ~3 hour break on those days, but it's usually filled with multi-tasking the laundry, food shopping, housecleaning, etc.
My New Year's resolution (like it is every year... :oops: ) is an hour or more at the Y at least 3X a week: half time on the Nautilus equipment and the other half on the treadmill or cross-trainer. Dennis, I'm totally impressed by your routine. Good for you! My bum hips (severely eroded sockets with bone spurs) keep me slower than the days when I used to be one of those people like Miss Mary, out rain/snow/shine (in Chicago), pounding the blacktop every day. I know that regular movement keeps my hip joints from "freezing up", keeps my anxiety/depression levels lower, and helps me get a better night's sleep -- but sometimes I'm just darn lazy! Hmmm -- I wonder if posting on S2K qualifies as fitness activity...? :P

when i walk on the beach - it is amazing how much better i feel, it's not boring and easy! can't wait to get back to it! i end up losing arount 6 inches everytime i do - at least one size! and that is only doingit a couple of times a week.

Not enough these days. I use to be a religious jogger and played tennis 3 -4 times a week. Now I am purchasing a peddle drive kayak and hope to get out on the lake or GOM three or four times a week.

Not excercising regularly is not a good thing, unless the idea of dying too young is a personal goal.

Lots of fun stuff that doesn't "feel" like a workout can be good for your heart also. That's why I like living here near the beach where I can ride my bike or walk along the seawall, battle the waves in a kayak, or swim just about anywhere (pool, canal, gulf). I still need to lose weight, since the food in Texas is as good as the scenery. :oops: But I'm happy to say that my heart is good, my lungs are healthy, and my blood pressure and cholesterol are still at the same level as when I was thinner and working in the ER.

Karan - LOL!!! Monthly walk around the neighborhood. If I lived nearby I'd be ringing your bell, dragging you outside daily!!!

90 minutes a day isn't too bad to pull off you do it in chunks. When I was really-really good about exercising, I did 30 minutes on the floor with Pilates exercises, then stretching, then 30 minute walk on the treadmill. Later, after showering and feeling energetic again, I'd walk the dog. I figured anything dog-walk related was a bonus - she sniffs way too much to get a consistent good clip going. Just when I'm swinging my arms getting my heart rate up, she's smelling another tree where some male dog peed! That's why she was last on my former exercise schedule. Now she's first and the ONLY thing. I need to change that.
