Just thought of this since we're talking about music in another thread.
Aside from Sesame Street records and the ones that came in a book ("When you hear the bell, turn the page!"), what was the first single from the Billboard charts that you had in your personal soon-to-be collection of singles? Obviously, it can be 45's, tapes, or CD's.
Mine was "Candyman" by Sammy Davis, Jr. Of course, I think that was a result of his appearance on Sesame Street...so maybe that doesn't count. If not, then "Mr. Jaws" by...um...I don't remember his name. I'll have to look it up now. Anyone remember that one?

Weren't they great? You could spend your babysitting money or allowance, easily and keep current with the latest music.
I still have all my old 45's and a few I confiscated from my older brothers!!! I even have a few of those plastic inserts you put in the middle to plan on a large turnable. If Nina saw them, she'd turn them into earrings!!!

Are you thinking of the other song with Twist in it? That was BEFORE my time.....just kidding.....was that by Buddy Holly? Or James Brown? Can't remember but I think I know the song you're talking about!
Yeah, I don't feel so old now!!! LOL
I just remember playing Twist & Shout (and I Want To Hold Your Hand) with a girl from my neighborhood. We were in her bedroom, playing the records on her portable record player. On top of her bed, precariously placed upon a rumbled bedspread. We kept jumping all around her room, playing each song 10 times each. How her mother ever put up with us I don't know!
Later, I remember pretending I was a Monkee, with 3 friends from the neighborhood. Somebody had a mop, for the mike. Another found an old guitar to strum. Assorted buckets were to imitate Mickey Dolenz and someone even had a winter ski cap on to be Mike Nesmith!!! See, I knew my Monkees well. We all wanted to be Davy Jones too. And got into a big discussion about who was cuter - DJ or Paul McCartney!!! Trouble was, I never realized the Monkees were staged, even after finding out the awful truth (thank you to my Eddie Haskell type brother Gerry!), I still did not want to believe it!

PS - edit, it was Chubby Checker! I was way off on my guesses. The song is called The Twist:
