Songs You Like But Don't Know the Title

#1 Postby Andrew92 » Mon Jan 31, 2005 7:21 pm

Is there any song you've listened to recently that maybe you've discovered you really like or are just curious about a song you've heard a lot lately, but you don't know what the name of it is?

Solution: Listen to some lyrics as best as you can (doesn't have to be many), post them here, and hopefully someone will be able to help you figure out the song's name and who sings it.

this is my fail proof (usually) way of finding the title to a song. jot down a line from the song paying attention to unusual words. use these words in a google search and also type 'lyrics'. Works for me without fail. :D

I do that a lot too, though very rarely, sometimes I have trouble even jotting a line or two down finding anything on a search engine. Or maybe your favorite search engine somehow is down. That's what this thread is for!

YES and YES, again!!!

You won't believe this I know but I was thinking of starting a thread like this before the site went down.

Okay, that said. Some history....for a baby boomer, I'm still into alt rock and current rock (long time fan of Green Day, Nirvana, etc.).

One of my faves in the past what 10 years, is New Year's Day, by U2.....we purchased it on iTunes so it's in our music library now. But just recently I heard the other song from that decade/time period that reminds me so much of NYD, came on the radio.....I wish the announcer had back announced the artist (one of my pet peeves about radio). He didn't.

Okay, think NYD here....think of bands like Bush, Pearl Jam, for that sound.....the song starts out slow, building up like NYD does, or Teen Spirit (no it's not that one!), the beginning lyric mentions a year....1925 or 1975? I wish I could remember more lines...they will come to me. This specific song was immensely popular. Huge hit!

Thanks for the thread! This has been driving me nuts.....I've been wanting to burn a CD for the car and give it to my 17 year old daughter, who's just recently realized there are so many 90s bands she missed out on.

Mary

PS - even if you think of 5 songs this could be, post them. I can listen to them at iTunes.

Are you thinking of 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins?

First line:
"Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time"

That song came out in about 1995-96, not long after Nirvana and Pearl Jam, I think, was still going somewhat strong (though not like in previous years).

Hey - I think that might be it. I'll give it a listen on iTunes tomorrow (you get 30 seconds for free before purchasing).

I'll let you know....funny, Smashing Pumpkins (that's Billy Corgan, lead singer?) was one of the bands she was saying she missed out on! This was when she was into boy bands, then again she would have been quite young when this song came out....a phase my daughter wants to forget....thank goodness I say! Finally, she's into bands with substance....ie know how to write and perform great music.

Thanx!!!
