High School Memories

#1 Postby azskyman » Sun May 18, 2003 11:26 pm

Graduation time. How quickly it goes. I have been out of high school for 39 years. Where, oh where, did all that time go?

At church back in Illinois on Mother's Day, Chris, the cute little unapproachable readhead who was third chair sax player in the band, was there with her mom, her husband, and two of her own grandkids! She's not quite the "hottie" she was back then. I saw her through the eyes of her second-chair counterpart back in 1963. She, no doubt, couldn't much get past my balding head and white goatee as I sat with Kathy and her mom in the pew just in front of her.

After the service I reached out to her and held her hand in both of mine as I joked of the tricks that age and gravity have played on us.

Still...it took 39 years for her to acknowledge me with a smile and a laugh...before her granddaughter reminded her she had to go to the bathroom. And after church, Kathy and I prepared to fly back to Arizona. Chris and her family flew back to Wyoming.

Funny how the years melt down the walls, break up cliques, and allow people who never let their guard down in those high school days welcome a well-earned smile and handshake many years later.

What high school memories pop into your head now and then? Even those of you who are in your teens have some of your own, don't you?

Well ... being only 21, HS is still very fresh in my mind. I guess one of the fondest memories is of the hottest girl in the school, Cara. OMGoodness she was a beauty. :D I have to get a pic of her up here someday but I need more space on my host. :o

The only thing I care to remember about high school is that I was on the football team that won Missouri State 4-A Champoinships in 1968 and 1969. I had a great deal of fondness for the "Red and Blue" Comets...none at all for my classmates.

One memory that sticks out in my head (1973-1977) is the ones of Rick Lupe (the friend who is in ICU in the Valley for the 3° burns), going to parties after the baseball games in Whiteriver, we would have HUGE parties amongst the GIANT cottonwoods along the river!

I went to an all girls Catholic HS. Loved it. Hated to graduate actually. I made 2 new friends the very first day, both from different grade schools than I went to. To this day, we are very best friends! I liked going with only girls - no makeup, no worrying about your hair and the best part - uniforms. At the time we grumbled but looking back, it sure made my mornings go easier.

Now I would like to wipe out about half of my HS memories.....since they involve my HS sweetheart, whom I married almost out of graduation. A year later, what were we thinking? Dumb, dumb. We eventually divorced....long story and since I don't want to go down that road, I won't. If I could do it over again, I'd never have one date with him and continue having 2 more years of fun with just my friends - no boyfriend. And then go onto college, another thing I missed out on. I did enroll in college at age 30 but I've had some setbacks there, no degree yet. Someday maybe.....

And oh, I'd study more and get better grades. Get more involved in school clubs too.

My father was the assistant principal. I managed to get sent to the principals office one day and guess who I faced! I received a paddling (yes corporal punishment - c.1976). When I got home that night he asked me if anything "unusual" happened at school today.

Due to an indiscretion at a dance one night, I ended up with a big ugly red mark on my neck (you know what I mean.) The next day was picture day. Like an idiot I wore a tee shirt that day. I convinced my buddy to switch shirts with me (he was wearing a turtleneck). When the yearbooks came out, there we were on the same page, wearing the same shirt.

I tell you what, I enjoyed high school a lot because I learned so much. Most people think of high school as a waste of time, but I liked it. I was super involved: Drama Club, Choir, Theatre, Speech and Debate, NFL, S.O.L.I.D., Student Government, Band, Future Teachers, French Club, International Club, and Key Club.

One of the saddest days was when I came to school on the senior's last day on my sophomore year. Our school had been vandalized by a couple of graduating seniors. They did so much damage that the whole east wing of the school was shut down! The worst thing was specific teachers had been targeted. It was probably, after 9-11, the most horrifying day in my life. That day I learned that not everyone is out to make the world a better place.

And the best day, was in the spring of my senior year. I was with my partner at the national qualifying tournament for Speech and Debate. We made to the final round even though my duet partner had a cold. We went and did our piece and about halfway through it, my duet partner's dress ripped down the back. We kept going and eventually made it to Nationals! I always told her that the only reason we made it was because of her ingenious plan to show skin! ;)

Sorry... I have rambled far too long, but got caught up in the topic.

I was in the out crowd in HS.

I remember lots, but two still stick to me.

1. Skipping school, going to a party with all (and I do mean all) of my friends. (A sizable presence gone from the schoold that day). And, well, when all 4 vice-principals showed up, we were busted. Then one of the girls knocked out the HS QB because he was the one who ratted on us.

2. Skipping school again, because one of the gang had drowned. The Principle banned us from attending the funeral. Needless to say, we paid our respects.

I actually didn't mind high school. I was very quiet, all my classmates wanted me to speak; when I did it was a big deal. However, I was quieter when I was younger.
