I'm sure many of you know by now that the Pentagon released its recommended Military base closure list. Unfortunately, for me, my military installation was on there...the 440th Airlift Wing in Milwaukee. I can't understand why 440th was on there (the list). Gov Doyle, Col. Hart (base commander) and many other WIS politicans and lobbyists are fighting for the 440th to stay open. If the 440th would close, approx 1600 jobs would have to move and realign with another base. Either Minneapolis ARS, Scott AFB (IL) or St. Louis ARS.... not fun.
Also, looks to me that a good majority of our paycheck places are on the closure list also!
Here is the complete list http://images.military.com/pdf/AppendixC.pdf

We had mixed news:
NAVY SAILS AWAY, BUT MARINES STAY
ALGIERS BASE WOULD CLOSE, BUT BELLE CHASSE WOULD EXPAND

I don't understand that myself.
Fort Monmouth is on the closure list here in NJ as well as Willow Grove in PA. From what I can gather, Willow Grove is pretty large and was always in the news when service men and women were deployed/returned from Iraq.
My step-son's Air National Guard Base, 177th Fighter Wing out of Pomona, NJ wasn't on the list.

Also Otis on Cape Cod...
Portsmouth NH Naval Station is the oldest in US--was original British naval base in America--before the American Revolution. Will have devastating effect up there since they closed the AFB there in the last round of cuts...
