Summer vacation and the "B" word.

#1 Postby azskyman » Mon May 26, 2003 8:02 pm

Some of you who have kids in school have already mapped out a few things to do this summer. Swimming or tennis lessons. Camps....by the day or week. Summer school. Athletic clubs. Any of a thousand different possibilities.

Still...in spite of your best laid plans and outlay of bucks on these things, it is sometimes only a matter of days before the kids get "BORED." That dreaded "B" word.

So...other than sleeping in til 11 am, what other signs of boredom are there? And how do you combat the "B" word in your household when it shows up? A list of chores perhaps?

Chores?? HUH????

Lol, I'm trying to find some volunteer work that I can do...I need something to pass the time besides clicking the refresh button over and over, waiting for the latest satellite image or NHC advisory.

We keep our youngest busy during the summer including two weeks of golf camp! She's been involved in golf since she was 6 1/2. Next month she'll turn 13. At least I can raise one golfer :-)Chores are a different matter! LOL

We're in trouble. The neighbors that we don't get along with just put in a huge above-ground pool in their backyard, in plain sight. I'm going to call the township office tomorrow to see if they were supposed to get a building permit for that. he he he.

I'm thinking about a family pass to the city pool. $125 for the summer. We can dump, er, take the kids there every day that the weather is nice.

my son and I are AZ storm chasers and storm chasing here is best during the monsoon which conveniently covered the period of July until school started in August. Once he hit 16 years of age he became a member of the working class and had his own car and girlfriend and that took care of any chance of boredom. My philosophy is that when the kid is old enough to work-then it's time for he/she to get a job. Before then, there's all sorts of things an enterprising young soul can do from delivering papers to mowing lawns and doign yardwork for people-pays well too. I don't recall my son getting all that bored here during Summer vacation.

My daughter will be coming the last week of June till the first week in August, have we got a list of things to do HOOOBooy, do we EVER! VBS (vacation bible school), 4th of July Parade-fireworks (oh wait, fireworks have been cancelled this year!) Uhhh.....the list goes on and on and on!

Growing up I NEVER got bored, too many fishin' holes, too many mountains to hike and WAY too many mud puddles to play in!

Steve - for some odd reason, maybe b/c I'm a homebody at heart, that "bored" word rarely comes up. Laura still enjoys being home and Nina loves a rare moment of down time since she's on the go a lot. I honestly don't know what this is like!!! Now if Laura could magically have a friend her age (male or female) appear into skateboading, riding bikes, hanging outside in the woods and creek, then she'd be thrilled. Most girls her age are not into things like this. So she does struggle a bit but finds things to do too.

And I guess I'm very quick to come up with a list of chores that both girls readily find things to do on their own! Nina will hop on the treadmill, or find a craft to do. Read a book. I must have done something right.....LOL

And again it all goes back to this brutal schedule we're on until college starts - rising each day at 5:45. We hate it! So we'll take the alternative, anyday, over that.

Dang I hate that word lol My 16 yr old doesnt have time to get too bored, football workouts and umpiring for 10 yr olds will keep him busy most of the time, now the 12 yr old she had half of day off yesterday and was already saying the B word. So I took her to Wal mart let her pick out veggie plants, flowers, etc. and helped her pot them, they are now her responsibility. Gonna send her to softball camp, cheerleader camp whatever kind of camp i can find lol Also for an allowance increase she is responsible for making sure the house is nice and neat before I ger home from work.
