HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - A pit bill that had once bitten a person fatally mauled a young girl before being subdued by firefighters using a fire extinguisher, officials said.

The girl, who was 2 or 3 years old, was pronounced dead at a hospital following the attack Tuesday at the dog owner's home, police Sgt. Dan Underwood said. Her name was not released.

"The girl, her mother and at least two other people were apparently hanging out on the house's porch," Underwood said. "The homeowner apparently told them all to stay out of the house where the dog was."

It was not known what provoked the dog.

Huntington firefighter Jason Price said the dog was wild-eyed and the hair on the back of its neck was raised, and that it rammed the door like a bull.

"Hollywood couldn't have made this dog look more evil," he said.

The pit bull's owner, who also was not identified, had posted several "beware of dog" signs and was keeping the dog inside the house because it had previously bitten another person, said Debbie Young, office manager for Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Control.

"A lot of people are under the impression that once they put those warning signs, they are in the clear. ... They are responsible for that animal," Young said.

No charges have been filed, authorities said Wednesday.

Young said animal control officials will ask a judge to order that the dog be destroyed.

i guess my question is if the dog had bitten a person before why wasnt it put to death. a pit bull with a history of biting is a death waiting to happen

The following story just goes to show that pitt bulls are dangereous at any age, The little fellas in this story were only 6 months old.

I sure don't see any stories about Labrador Retrievers biting a kid now do we? From experience, Labs are WORSE than Pits I'm sorry, I should know, I own 2 labs, I wouldn't trust them around ANYONE other than my immediate family!

Yeah, it's a tragedy, just like the little girl up here that was torn limb from limb but as I said before and I'll say it again, it's NOT the DOGS, it's the irresponsible OWNERS and the Animal Control Officers FAULT for not taking care of these dogs BEFORE!

in this case i dont agree. pit bulls act just like wild animals hunting prey. they seem to single out the elderly and young kids

Even though I would never own a Pit Bull (due to liability, homeowners Ins, but most importantly because I really think they are an ugly breed, Just my opinion though)

Its not the dogs fault, its these moron people that think its cool to own a powerful muscular breed that is the pit bull, but don't train the animal and just leave it tied up with half rotten rope in the back yard all day. Any breed can be dangerous, but add a moron with a big powerful dog and you have a disaster waiting to happen

that doesnt prove alot. im sure i could find cuddly pics of people and lions together too. if i had pics of torn up bodies ripped apart by pit bulls i doubt i would be allowed to post them.

Don't know why that particular breed seems to make the headlines so much in negative news than other breeds...at least it seems.

Many end up abused and in illegal dog fighting for ie...2 huge factors in what make some ill tempered.

Agreed. Dogs are dogs..period. Pit bulls seem to get a lot of unfair publicity. A properly trained and socialzed dog will not attack unprovoked. Dont blame the dog blame the owner.

"AMEN!" George! I've been filling in for the Animal Control Officer on his days off (imagine THAT......we're so dam short on officers, it's called Multi Tasking I guess ). On the 2 days I fill in for him, I see MORE dog bites involving little kids and guess what breed is at fault??? YUP....a Labrador Retriever!! Of course, rainstorm will probably disagree with ME on that, I mean, I have first hand experience ie putting the dogs in quarintine, taking pictures, writing a report, writing the owners a citation but of course, that doesn't mean I KNOW what I'm talking about!

I work VERY close with the Humane Society of the White Mountains and I cannot BEGIN to tell you HOW MANY Pits I see being brought into the shelter to be put down....WHY??? The HS will pick them up from ABUSED homes, they have been so BRUTELY abused, beaten, underfed, no water, sores from collars that are TOO tight, shock collars being overused, I mean HECK, no WONDER these dogs go bananas, I would too if I were abused from day 1!

Give it a rest. Pits get a bad rap, and any dog can go bad. I have heard Chows are far worse than any dog.

Like someone said earlier, it is the OWNERS responsibility to train the dog.

Im a pizza delivery guy, and used to deliver newspapers as well. Ive been bitten twice. Once by a POODLE and another time by a Lab. Its possible the Lab was just being overy playful since the bite barely broke the skin but that little SOB of a poodle meant business.

I've had my forearm nearly licked to death by a poodle. But then again, she be a 'ho!

I saw a pitbull in a car at the supermarket the other day.

It was just sitting in the front seat looking out the window.

Honestly, pitbulls get heaps of negative publicity and it's unfair to label the breed as ruthless killers. For every agressive pitbull, there's probably a bunch that wouldn't hurt a fly. But you never hear about them. What's exciting about a headline reading "Pitbull laps water from a bowl"?

Judge the deed, not the breed!

Also, Petey of "Little Rascals/Our Gang" fame was a pitbull.

I own and have owned pit bulls for years. I find nothing at all wrong with the breed. I have witnessed incredible cruelty toward the animals though. Many people do not understand what they are getting when they get a pit. It is a very strong, very loyal, very protective, very territorial, and very loving dog. Pits require alot of attention and alot of correcting. If you think that you can tie one up and leave it alone and still have a decent dog you are quite wrong. Pit bulls are the same species as all other dogs and therefor are PACK animals. they must belong to a group and not held in isolation. All dogs will adopt their human families as the pack but not if tied up in the yard for long periods. I cannot see why people blame the dog for attacks when it is the owner who is usually at fault. There are bad dogs, but there are bad dogs from any breed. I was severely bitten by a german shepard/lab mix and I am here to tell ya that Pits are no worse or no better than any other dog.
