Worst Drivers Found In Two States

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Massachusetts and Rhode Island residents rank at the bottom of the list when it comes to driving skills.

A new survey by GMAC Insurance shows Ocean State drivers as worst in the country in knowing the rules of the road. Massachusetts ranked next to last.

The survey says one in 10 drivers in Rhode Island may be unfit for the road.

The GMAC survey revealed that one in four Americans say they would roll through a stop sign. One in four do not know how to pass a slow-moving vehicle and one in two do not merge correctly in traffic.

The survey tested 100 adults from each of the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia.

People that merge incorrectly are one of my pet peeves! Around here, a lot of people will move to the left lane to "let" merging traffic on. There's no law that requires drivers to do that. While that is a courtesy, many people here now expect that traffic is supposed to move over for them. They will come up the ramp doing 35 and go right onto the expressway, and then speed up. If you don't move over, they honk at you! On my way to work every day, I need to stay in the right lane to get the next exit. People will come up the ramp like they're going to run into me. If they would just step on the gas a little, they could ease right in front of me, I'd even take my foot off the gas to give them a little extra space. But NO, they think that they are supposed to have the right of way, and make no effort to find an opening and merge in at traffic speed.

Shocked....Florida wasn't the worst!!!!!!!!!!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT EITHER! In fact, just this week I-95 between Boca Raton and north of Jupiter (stem to stern of Palm Beach County, FL) was deemed the worst stretch of highway for accidents in the U.S. because of driver behavior.

Seattle has the worst drivers OF ALL!!!!! Couldn't imagine any worst drivers then what we have here!

All I have to say is...they made a HUGE mistake, with ALL the citations I've issued this week Pinetop takes the honors IMHO!

I hear ya there! The folks here in Omaha are REALLY bad about that. I'v actually witnessed several times where the merging lane of traffic actually "forced" their way onto the interstate causing an accident or near-accident.

Boston drivers are the worse people in the world! Honestly they are. A few yearsago, my parents and I were up in Boston (for whatever reason) and we saw a car back into a car that driving down a parking lot. The car that was driving DROVE over the back bumper of the car that hit him. Both drivers exchanged hello's with the finger with some words exchanged, and continued on their seperate ways. I could go on about other things I've seen and heard about Boston and Mass. drivers, but I could probably fill up a page or 2.

I moved to Seattle 7 days ago from South Carolina. Had no trouble on the entire 3000 mile road trip until I hit Washington State. Then people seemed irritated that I was moving over to let them on the highways, and they never let me back in the slow lane (where I belong). But the worst part is that the people -- and roads-- in Seattle terrify me. I've only driven here 2 days, and plan to park the car as soon as I move into a bus zone.

But-- in SC, every three seconds on the road I would hear myself exclaim "idiot!" or something similar. Here I just say "wow!". They're not stupid as far as I can tell. Just bold and caffeinated!
