3 Alarm Fire In My Hometown

#1 Postby DaylilyDawn » Mon Jun 06, 2005 9:05 am

There is a 3 alarm fire going on right now in my hometown of Bartow, FL. It is near the old courthouse in Bartow downtown area. The old courthouse is not being used as city government facilities but houses a library of Polk County since Bartow is the county seat The courthouse is an old building that goes back to the early history of Bartow.

Daylily - that's a real shame. I hate to see historic buildings lost like this. Let's hope they can contain the fire ASAP. Good news here is it probably was empty (of people). At least in the one building. I hope they got everyone out of the library (think of the loss there alone, all those books!).

So far the old courthouse isn't in any danger of being destroyed. The fire is a little bit east of the courthouse . It is the Stuart building that has burned. It was one of the old buildings left still standing in Bartow. I hate to see destruction of any of the old buildings in Bartow whether by fire or man. It loses its old time feeling when that happens. Bartow is a small town that has remained essentially the same since I moved away 20 something years ago.

The fire is in the final stages of being put out.it has destroyed three businesses as well as the contents of each business. The Stuart building was one of the oldest buildingas along with the old courthouse. It is located at the corner of Main Street and Wilson Ave. The old courthouse was at the intersection of Main Street and Broadway . Wilson Ave is about 2 blocks below Broadway. When I was in high school, I used to walk to school and Wilson Ave was one of the streets I had to walk down. I always like the Stuart Building because of its look.
