Tsunami Warning has been cancelled. VERY lucky that was offshore with no Tsunami. Damage would have been extensive in a populated area.

Northridge quake was a 6.7 and the Loma Prieta quake during the World Series was a 6.9

That's very scary news....I'm hopeful no tsunami occurs...7.4 is quite a quake

In addition to Becky (sis) & her family in the Portland burbs, Dave's (bro in law) mom & dad live in Medford...his older brother and family near Grants Pass, and his oldest brother & sis in law live in Portland but have a beach house near Lincoln City.....so anything happening close to Oregon gets my undivided attention..

I thought sis was scared of tornadoes until hearing the panic in her voice a few years ago after experiencing her first earthquake (felt jolts from a large quake near Tacoma, WA); it scared the daylights out of her....far worse than any storm ever has.

Actually... a big Tsunami is NOT likely with a 7.0, certainly not one like in Asia last year. Local rises in water are possible. This seems to be more of a cautionary note after the disaster in December(people going to the beach etc.)

I just spoke to sis by phone, and she is fine, but get this: David's brother, sis in law, and two young children were at their beach house, and have been evacuated.....

Dave said his brother is okay (spoke to him via cellphone)...but the evacuation was a big hassle (he and his wife had just put their babies to bed for the evening).

Crescent City, CA is reportedly evacuating some residents close to the water. No waves reported so far... if it were to hit, it would first hit within minutes in Northern California and then gradually spread north and south away from there.

I can understand about that being a hassle Perry. You just do not want to awaken sleeping children, unless you have to. Under these circumstances, it was necessary! If something terrible did happen, they'd be glad they left. Still, it's not easy I'm sure evacuating with small children. Thankfully I've never had to do that. We had a chemical spill nearby on an interstate once. But it was a few miles away and we were okay. For about 5 minutes there though we weren't sure if we needed to leave. And if we had to, it was an immediate decision. We couldn't have taken anything with us but the clothes on our backs and flee in our cars.

Our local news is reporting that threat of tsunami is over for our coast...now a quake that size would have scared the daylights out of me...thank GOD it was so far offshore...

Minutes after the warning was issued people rushed to the ocean in hopes of seeing the tsunami. Good grief. Can you believe this?

This earthquake occurred in a deformed section of the southernmost Juan de Fuca plate that is commonly called the Gorda plate. The epicenter lies to the west of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Light shaking from this earthquake was widely felt along the northern California - southern Oregon coastline.

Preliminary analysis of the quake indicates that it resulted from slip on a NE striking, left-lateral, strike-slip fault; this type of mechanism has been documented for other earthquakes having locations in the interior of the Gorda plate. This earthquake did not produce a tsunami. Earthquakes with strike-slip mechanisms are less likely to produce tsunamis because they cause relatively little vertical ground displacement.

Earthquakes are common in the Gorda plate, which is subjected to north-south compression due to the north-west moving Pacific Plate that collides with the southern boundary of the Gorda Plate along the east-west Mendocino Fracture Zone. This quake occurred approximately 67 miles west of the epicenter of the November 8, 1980 7.2M earthquake. There have been 3 other quakes of magnitude M>6 that have occurred with 50 miles radius of the epicenter of this quake (August 16, 17 1991 and July 24 1996).
