Your Worse Pain

#1 Postby Janice » Sun Jul 03, 2005 8:23 am

What was your worse pain you ever had, physical not mental.

I had two children, but I think a toothache I had for two days was way worse than childbirth for me. I can still remember that pain.

I have a herniated disc in my neck. Sometimes the pain can be unbearable. Imagine someone has a vice grip on your neck, and they are twisting it. I take anything and everything I have in the house because I just can't get the pain to go away.

I would have to say broken ribs. Everytime I moved, laughed, etc. it felt like someone was sticking a knife in my side. Of course, my sadistic friends and family chose that time to tell some of the funniest jokes I have ever heard

Passing a kidney stone was the worst...although having gallstones was no walk in the park.

Emotionally, losing my mom in my 20's was tough...but with all respect mom, the worst emotional anguish was waking up on the tarmack at Tan San Nhut Airbase in Vietnam the very first night I was there and smelling that country, listening to nearby artillery, and realizing that I had at least one year of that ahead of me.

Colon resection - 1999. 5 hour surgery, horrendous pain for 3 straight weeks. Between the third and fourth week the pain began to subside, not go away completely but it did ease up. After only daily prayers to do so, I might add. Went to sleep with it, woke up with it, had to get thru my day with only Tylenol (kids were younger and I could not take heavy duty pain meds, I had to be a mom in charge).

It was NOT a fun time for me! Can smile about it now but back then it was so hard to get thru.

Prior to this surgery, I had 30 full minutes of labor, fully dialated, near the pushing stage, between Epidural shots. I just never thought anything could be more painful than childbirth! How wrong I was.....

One thing I did learn the hard way though is for any post-op severe pain, the more quickly you get moving (getting out of that hospital bed, sitting up in an upright position, walking, etc.) the better you feel. For my second colon surgery, I got moving within 24 hours of that surgery. My recovery time was cut in half at least. And I just felt much better - all around.

The worst pain I had was a chronic hormonal headache lasting three days. That was a ten on the scale. The kidney stones were a nine and three quarter. I confessed to sins I hadn't even committed.

Passing a kidney stone for me! I would rather be in labor than go through that again. At least with labor pains the pain subsides. But with kidney stones.. not going to happen!

Kidney stones are the worst pain.....I'm glad I don't own a gun because when these things hit me and I've had a quite a few I would have put myself out of my misery.... I've had disk surgery, and my arm almost cut off but none could compare to stones....

Worst pain?

(1)My hip incident from just a few months ago;

(2)A combination migraine and tension headache onslaught for nearly a week back in ~1985

both of which landed me in the hospital.

Oddly enough, my one and only childbirth wasn't that bad (only about 2 hours of "hard" labor), although 25 years can soften that kind of pain memory fairly easily!

Worst for me was the entire week before my appendectomy back in 1990. I had a horrible stomach ache that got worse as the week wore on...then of course my appendix burst and you can't imagine how that felt. Ugh.

Second would probably be cutting the tip of my finger off a couple of years ago. Ouch.

I doubt any of this compares to childbirth though..my mom had the 3 of us without any meds whatsoever.

I was training to play professional soccer when I lived in Germany.

Back in those days, there was no real limitations on the length of studs that could be worn, so most players had studs/cleats as long as 2/3 inches. On top of that they were solid steel.

I was tackled from behind with the studs basically ripping my left knee wide open. You could see the ligaments and muscles, that was how much of a gash that it was.

Looking at the interior of your knee has not a pretty sight, nor was the feeling. The strange thing was that it did not do near the amount of permanent damage that one might expect. It was more a psychological thing with me than physical.

The worst pain I have ever had was when I broke the number 3 toe on my left foot by catching it against the corner of the floor model television we had at that time. The other worst pain I had was when the dentist shot a dose of Novocaine through the roof of my mouth. I passed out when he did that and bit his finger as a result of losing consciousness.

I guess you could call my worst pain when I was wacked in the head with a ladder and had to have stapples in my head!!! For my wife either labor pains or when she broke her knee. She still has problems with the knee.

I have IBS, and I don't think anything could be worse than that. My stomach will go into spasms with severe cramping. And it lasts for hours. It hurts so bad that I can't move and just cry like a baby. I would not wish it on my worse enemy. For IBS there is no cure and no effective treatment. The attacks sometimes just come on with no warning.

Hearing some of those storys makes me cringe. I've been lucky. I did have some excruciating toothaches. The whole world comes to a standstill. I also had some sciatica which was no picnic, either.
