ORLANDO, Fla. -- One of the most popular plants in the whole state of Florida is the sago.

The funniest thing about this is it's not even a palm, or even related, but can resemble one, WESH NewsChannel 2 Garden Rebel Robert Vincent Sims said.


Sagos are very hardy when they are fully mature. In the beginning stages of growth, they look almost like a stump and then begin to blossom like an umbrella.

The leaves are very soft and a light green color at this stage, and if you aren't careful, you will damage them with a lot of contact. After the leaves have hardened, then you can handle it more often.

There is one problem with the sago plant: it attracts a little bug called the Asian scale. The Asian Scale will be found at the base of the plant. You want to look for white specks that look like barnacles.

If you find this, you should purchase a good pesticide and treat until all signs are gone or you could lose the plant.
